Can we expect lots of Squarepusher-esque strangeness to be emanating from your bass soon then? :D I still want to know how he got those synthy sounds on "The Modern Bass Guitar"...

Nice i run 2 synths when I play with my prog jam band once every 2 years and just listening to the sound changes the way i play completely, and the roots i use to improvise change instantly, it's a nice refreshing change to the modern mellow tone i normally run with.

and can i put a shameless bump in to Mr Flynn's article that it was great and even better for me because my bass is on the work bench behind the bass John is working on which hopefully means i can claim that MY bass was in a bass mag.

I have finally got round to getting my "trusty" old Sei bass sorted.

Well, I've booked a day off, got a gig bag, and got a rail ticket to London. I'm taking it to Martin for some TLC on the 11th March, I will be leaving it with him so he can work his magic.

I will be changing both the P'ups as the triple coil model is no longer available, so I think it best to get pair.

I can't wait.

So, my new Sei has been ordered. :D

Went to The Gallery today, spoke to Martin, drank tea, fussed AJ the cat, and discussed options. It's going to be a 5-string Jazz. Lightweight swamp ash body with a very pretty spalted maple facing, 24-fret maple neck, ebony fingerboard with mother-of-pearl blocks and side LEDs, Nordstrand Big Single pickups and probably a J-Retro EQ. Build time is 12-14 months, but at least the clock is now ticking! I can't wait - I love having something like this to look forward to! :D

I've also left my singlecut 5 there for a service... I've had it 7 years now, and I think it's due an MOT. :) It's getting the usual setup, new strings, etc, and also a new U-Retro EQ in it. The Aguilar that's in there isn't bad, but I think it needs something with sweepable mids. Since the mids on the bass are so prominent and detailed, it'd be nice to be able to focus the midrange tone in different ways. It's also going to get a series/parallel switch for the bridge pickup.

So, a busy and productive day was had... roll on next April! :D

Awesome Russ - let me know when you're collecting the SC as I'd love hear a different circuit in it as I dig my Demeter but I've been thinking about what other options might offer. And your jazz sounds wicked - an ebony board is an interesting option - should be very punchy and definined - really exciting stuff. Do I have permission to take any snaps if I happen to be in there and yout bass is progressing? let me know - if not no worries!

Feel free to take as many pics as you like. :) You know how it works, in 3 months or so, there will probably only be a plank of maple with a bit of ebony stuck to it, and it'll stay that way for another 6 months, then it all comes together at the end really quickly!

I'm not back in town again until May-ish (although then I'll be back to stay) - I'll be picking up the singlecut then, and I'll let you know when that's going to be... looking forward to it!

Hi

I mentioned to Kevin Lindsey on Facebook recently that I was playing a gig with a good guitarist. Well, I have found out a bit more about the guy.

His name is LeBurn Maddox and has played/worked with a few rather big names like BB King, John Lee Hooker, Jeff Healey, Chaka Khan, Lional Richie etc etc and was signed to Atlantic Records.

A bit out of my league but a great chance to give my Sei 7 a proper outing.

Will let everyone know how the practices and lead up to the gig goes.

Hey All,

Picked up the Sei Jazz 7 fretted last Saturday. Surprised to find it also in the Bass mag article. I bought a copy from The Gallery as a keepsake.

I'm very happy with the result. I wasn't very helpful when it came to describing what I was looking for, particularly pups + circuit, but I really can't fault any area of the instrument. One particularly notable characteristic is the incredible sustain...no doubt the result of the through neck and pups/electrics.

I'll get some good pics taken of my 3 x Sei's together and post them idc. Gallery pics attached inline...

Duney, your Sei J 7 is absolutely gorgeous with a fab spec and choice of woods. Can you remind me what pickups and circuitry you ended up with and I'm looking forward to the family pictures.

Technotic, is your headless SEI finished yet?

Matthew - Thru-neck vs bolt on...well the lengthy sustain from the 7 thru is really noticeable. The profile at the join of the thru neck into the body also appears to be more shallow, although the bolt-ons are sculpted pretty well to achieve a similar-ish result.

Mike F - That's true. I'm enjoying getting to grips with it, but as I (reservedly) said to Martin...I've really liked playing my Sei 5 fretless in the last couple of years, the 7 might get used more as a 'training' bass (so that the 5s feel even better when I go back to them)!
BTW, your play is sounding great Mike.

emjazz - Outer strings...maybe...just looked and they might be a little closer to the edge than my 5s, but there's not much in it.

sei24bass - Found a local photographer who does some 'object' work for advertising, so I'll try a get the 3 snapped together soon. Spec is...
