Great Idea, Martin and his team deserves a thread all their own.
Here is mine.
I Really think Martin does some of the finest wood work out there.

I think thats about it. It does seem quite a wihile ago I got it made. Glad I did I have never regreted any of my choices. I remember playing almost every bass in Martins shop. Some things were nice but every time I pickup a Sei be it a Flamboyant, Jazz or what ever they just feel like nothing else. Just so right and the sounds as some of you know is very unique to each one.

One more question for you: have you ever seen a fanned fret headless? If so, is the neck's end parallel to the 1st fret or parallel to the 7th (that is like a normal fretted bass)?
Did anyone read about the bass of the year competion in bassist and guitarist along time ago. It was a bass made by Martin and featured the making of it in Bassist. I knew to guy that won it, the chance to get is own SEI made. Thats how i came across Sei basses. I could believe it when the guy sold it?????....... I mean it was you know........ Anyway he only sold it for £1000. Nutter

Also, I remember that competition as well. When I placed my order, I said to Martin that it was when I first wanted a Sei. He went to a folder and there was the feature !! If I'm right that competition was back in 1996.

There's a bit of valve compression on the recording that makes it a little growlier, but mostly that's just the bass.
It's just a matter of picking the right pickups and woods, really. Before the Sei, I had a GB that, although being a lovely bass, was too bright and peaky - maybe a little too hi-fi. I deliberately wanted to go for a darker, growlier tone for the Sei. Martin will be able to advise the best combo to get for the tone you're after.

Well, I went to see Level 42 yesterday and as usual spent the rest of the night trying to overcome the desire to put my basses on a bonfire. Instead of being inspired by the awesome playing of Mark King as I should be I end up in a deep depression.
However, common sense prevailed on this occasion so I went to The Gallery today and placed my order for a Sei Flamboyant.
The spec is roughly as follows:
Flamboyant offset 5 string.
Walnut body wood.
Thuya facing (full front, wings only on back)
Twin Bartolini pickups.
Schack electronics.
Active/passive push/pull on volume control.
Black hardware (abm bridge, 5 control knobs).
LEDs on small toggle switch.
Wenge and flamed maple neck (7 piece).
Macassa Ebony fretboard.
5mm Abalone position markers.
Green LEDs on side only.
That is pretty much it.
I must say how friendly Martin and John are. Could not ask for more.
So the 8 to 10 months wait starts here.

You did the right thing, never a good idea to burn your instrument after seeing someone like Mark King. The bass sounds nice too, heres to the long wait it will be worth it.
