Hi Guys

At the risk of adding another few hundred posts to this already magnificent thread I just wondered what amps eveyone is using?

I only ask as I have just got myself an Epifani 502 head - I'm still using my EBS 15" Proline cab (which is sounding great) but the Epi gear is soooooooo lush compared to the good-ish sound of the EBS HD350 - I can't beleive there's so much more character and detail in the sound. Not that you don't get a detailed sound with EBS, it's just that the Epi stuff has a depth and warmth that the EBS doesn't... anyway it's fantastic for fingerstyle which is what I am into in a big way now - as in I do the 4-digit Garrison thing, and I love playing fretless - and this amp is even making my old Thumb bass sound amazing! I can't wait to play the new Sei through - I think it's going to blow my mind - and my ears!

I have waited a long, long time to get the right gear and I really pleased to say that my playing is finally at a stage where I think I actually deserve some good stuff... I've worked on my crap for 23 years - the last 17 on just two basses!

Anyway - your thoughts on amp choice for your Sei would be good to hear - all I end with is if you haven't played through some Epifani gear - try it - I think you'll love it.

Hi Mike

Glad to hear you're getting on ok with your Epifani. I really should've tried one when I bought my Sei. It must be a fantastic feeling to finally find the tone you've been after; I'm still a little way off yet.

Unfortunately it's looking like I won't be able to stretch to the EBS at the moment as I'm even more skint than I thought. Best of luck selling it though, and if anything changes I'll let you know.

As we've already discussed, I'm currently using an Ashdown ABM500 with 2 Aguilar GS112s. The Ashdown came about mainly due to the requirements of my current band (a rock band), and it works pretty well with my Rics. Unfortunately I'm getting mixed results with the Sei. Used it again last night, got better results than last week; sounds good for solo stuff (detail is actually pretty good now), good for slap, but when the band kicks in it just disappears completely, so I don't think it's going to get used in my current band, which is a shame. It just hasn't got the girth that the Rics have, and gets swamped by the guitars. The E is equally big (the Rics don't have a huge E anyway), but the A to G strings are just so much thinner, more in the Stingray range, which is too thin for me for band use (Rics actually appear to get louder as you go across/up the neck, and that's a big factor in my style; higher-register stuff really sings out). I don't think the Ashdown helps there. When playing through the EBS in the shop I was able to thicken the midrange (whilst still keeping it detailed and musical) via eq, and the whole bass sounded fulller and more even; unfortunately the Ashdown doesn't has sufficient eq to do that, and at the moment I can't afford 2 amps/rigs. The Sei is marvelously comfortable though!
