Notrt - +1 for the photos. Sounds like a great build.

Howie - Just like myself, and those before me, you won't hear anything for about 4 months or so. I know how you feel....


I've booked a date to go down to The Gallery and see my bass (arranged with Alex by e-mail today.) I'm driving down from Glasgow for a family celebration so I'll be in London for a few days. I did ask if there were pics in the meantime, but I still don't have any !!

Rest assured there will be more than a few pics to post when I return !!

Hello to all:

I believe that mine was the first full sized fanned fret instrument which they have started to date. I picked 34 to 36" scale lengths for a veriety of objective and subjective reasons;I chose the Flamboyant shape because I have been jonesin' for one for years.

If I was doing it again, I might go for a fanned fret 33 to 36" scale length, but I am not at all aure how that would work out with this body shape. I do like fairly heavy guage B strings (.135 on my 35" scale Roscoes), and my notion was that I would be good to go with even string to string tension if I used a .130 B string with a 36" scale length...I used a .145B string on the 34" scale 5'ers and 6'ers I used before I switched to the Roscoes a few years back; had a couple dozen custom wound, and they did the trick as far as losing the spaghetti effect re tension, albeit I had to boil 'em more often than I liked to keep some zing/edge in their sound.

Since I do not have this instrument yet, I am not sure whether she reached (or exceeded) my hoped-for objectives in commissioning her...but the last set of pix sure look pretty...when she posts (eta unknown at this point) I will let you all know.

Photos will be posted shortly by some of the more astute members---while I live on these notebook 'puters, I am still a Luddite at heart, and sometimes a lazy one, too...

Hey man, thanks for the photos! It's coming out great, and yes, the flamboyant is a really beautiful body shape... I'm very interested to see how they will put the bridge on yours; the cut at the end of the body implies that they will put a similar system with the one they use for all headless basses, yet the angle at which it's cut isn't nearly as extreme as it should be.
Hopefully, I'll try your bass at its final stages and post back before you get it (I'll be back by December 8).

Another thing that worries me is this: if after the zero fret there isn't a parallel (to the zero fret) nut to hold the strings, and instead there's just the system that holds the strings which will be, if I understand it correctly, vertical to the neck, as with normal headless basses, then the tension on the G string will be bigger than it should be, as there will be about an inch more (compared to the B) from the zero fret to the string holder (yeah, whatever their system for headless basses is called), thus making the tension difference not so extreme... it might feel more like a 36-35 scale, as a zero fret is like a fretted note, it's not like a nut that holds the string and divides tension.
Hopefully someone will understand what I'm trying to sei. to say.

Edit: Just spoke with fullrangebass on the phone and he told me that this shouldn't be an issue as the string will be bending after the zero fret, so it will divide the tension too (maybe not as well as a nut, but well enough). I just don't have any experience with zero frets, so I didn't know.

DragonLord beat me to posting the pics of notrt's new fanned bass.

It looks stunning especially the fretboard which sets the whole bass off. I am really looking forward to more pictures in due course.:hyper:

i remember Martin talking about an 8 a while ago but i cant remember if it was this one

oh ok, without anything to gauge the size of the neck against (neck, pickups) i can never tell how many strings a bass is gonna have

I'm loving that fanned fret - it is beautiful :cool: :cool:

Popped in today to drop off mine for repair of the volume pot and a quick setup.

Afraid I had a little play with your 7 while I was there Matthew - 2 too many strings for me but it is a lovely player - sounds really nice. Hope you don't mind. Man I'm starting to get bad GAS for that fretless now.

7 - At the time Alex couldn't find your Sei. I'd brought in my digital camera to take a couple of pics for you but Alex wasn't really happy with me taking pics of someone else's bass - got a point I suppose.

She won't have a bridge; I went with the individualized ABM headless tuners for a variety of reasons, not the least being that I wanted 19mm spacing @ the bridge. I think she's going to look pretty striking once the hardware is in and strings are in place-the cocobolo facings came out better than I dared to hope, honestly.

What state was my bass in? did she have the front pickup still missing or where they both back in place?

Oh man that cocobolo is very, very nice.

Matthew - it had all pickups in. Lighter than I thought it would be. As I said too many strings for me but it is sounding very nice - you got a piezo bridge in there as well. Had it through a Mark Bass combo. My small hands struggled with the width of the fingerboard. Very impressive bass that.

7 - I'm back up there next Sat to pick up my baby, I'll try again to get a looksie. Bet you can't wait to get down and look for yourself.

To both - YOU ARE NOT HELPING MY GAS...

As for specs - It would definitely be 5 string and clearly lined so I could see easily for reference. Oh how the purists will howl. Definitely the Schack circuit again. I would be looking for a more traditional fretless sound to complement the growly Sei I already got - would want to talk to Martin to get some ideas on woods and pickups. Also, thinking about a different body shape - possibly a headed original.

My more pressing thought is "Do I pull the trigger on another 10 month build..." :help: Once I get that done the rest will follow.

That is really useful. I have the Schack as well and my copy is now a little faded.

One thing, I could never tell which way the dip switch was on. Was it the '0' or the '1'. I just ended up using my ears to see which sound seemed the best to me. Can you answer this?

Btw As you say my bass is ready I think I will try and collect it next Saturday when I am up in London for a party!:hyper:
