Sell a Precision to buy a Ric 4003?

Howdy,

Would you sell a Fender American Vintage '58 Precision Bass to get a Rickenbacker 4003? I have always wanted a Ric and have saved about half of the money necessary to get one. I currently own three basses, the '58 P Bass, a Tony Franklin fretless P Bass and a Fender 50th Anniversary Jazz Bass, so if I sold the '58 I figure I would still have the Tony Franklin P Bass to go with the Ric and Jazz. The only problem is that the '58 is a fantastic bass and I would rather not sell it (or any of the others for that matter), but of the three the '58 would be the one to go.

I will be in Boulder, CO next week and would have the opportunity to test drive a bunch of Rics at Wildwood Guitars. Anyway just curious what others might think about this idea.

If you have half the money and don't want to sell the '58, just save up. Either way, Wildwood is definitely the right place to buy from.

If you are asking, in general, if I would sell a P to buy a 4003, assuming I couldn't have both, I would.

If you are asking if I think you should sell this bass that you seem to really like for another one, I'd say no. Because you really seem to like it. If you sell it, you'll regret it. Are you going to regret buying the 4003 a few months later if you keep the P?

Keep your P, and keep saving. You can have both.

I wouldn't. I'd buy a Ric to add to my arsenal but I wouldn't trade a perfectly good P bass for one.
Love the Ric ergonomics, love it for recording, but can't get a good band mix!

Wildwood is definitely the right place to buy from.

I guess if you're only interested in new ones & a 4003.
I discount them completely, since they don't carry 4004 models.

Not at the moment, but they do carry them on a fairly regular basis.

I would, but I have rarely found a P bass that I like, and have never found one I like more than my Ricks. Since you really like this P, I'd suggest keeping it and saving the rest of the money needed for the 4003...unless you fall in love with a particular Rick at Wildwood.

Personally I wouldn't, but we obviously have different tastes. I don't care for Rics and of those 3 basses, the '58 is the one I'd keep.

It's a bit redundant to have two P-basses, isn't it? However, you shouldn't sell either one unless you're 100% sure

I have 6 P Basses ...each one sounds, plays, and inspires me differently. But that's just me .....

Only you can answer this question with any value. As a P bass player and one who as owned and played a vintage Rick in the past, I prefer P basses and would not buy another Rick. If you love your current bass I would not ditch it for something so drastically different. That's just me.

Plus there're always at least twenty delicious Precisions up for grabs in the classifieds here, and usually for an insanely great price. I'll definitely be buying one sometime before the year's end.

This. Rickenbacker isn't going anywhere, and their new basses are as good as they've ever made. Keep the 58 P-bass and get the 4003 (or whatever model you like--I like the 4003) when you're comfy.

If you are even thinking of trading in an instrument for something else, then deep down inside you are not happy with the instrument.

You could listen to the people telling you to keep it because they think you "need" a _____ based on their experiences, not your own. What will end up happening sooner than later, you will put the instrument in the case and never play it. When you go to sell it because you never play it, the opinions based on other people's experience saying you "need" a _____ will keep you from selling it.

You could listen to the outlier's opinion that says the complete opposite that says "you only need what you need based on your experiences."

Then again, what do I know since I only have 2 basses because I like the feel of them and have no desire for a third.

Assuming it's a reissue I'd still keep it. If you've saved half what you need keep saving. In my experience you'll find yourself saving "to get that 58 back." You might not find one you like as much as you have now..
It's a never ending circle. I have a fretless jazz and p-bass and I love them, but they're not always as useful as a fretted bass depending on your band and type of music. Contrary to popular belief Jaco played a fretted bass most of the time. There's nothing worse than buyers (or sellers) remorse. Keep saving for the rick, find a good used one.
