Sell a Precision to buy a Ric 4003?

I know but all of the early 70's p-basses with the A width nut are in high demand especially for gigging. I'll put a pic up. Everybody should have atleast one 72-74 p-bass. My 81 P-bass was just about the heaviest one I've ever played.

One day I'll get another P Bass with a RW board. I'm perfectly happy with the traditional width and fatter necks. Maybe it will be vintage.

My P is a '57 style. It weighs just 8.03 lbs with the bridge and pickup covers. It's crazy-light! Love it

the late 50 maple necks were some of the best playing p's ever. Small fret wire too.

I guess the question is if you can deal without having a fretted P. Tough call without knowing what you have going on, and if you want to cover it with the Jazz. You have saved half already, I'd be inclined to just keep saving and hang on to the P that you already like. Maybe you sell it after you buy a Ric. But it at least gives you options.

He's all ready halfway to the rick so definitely keep the 58 and save for a few more months or so...A bass you love that feels goood and inspires you is not easy to find.

Maybe not. P basses are far easier to find in the wild than a Ric. I'm sure he has heard and played P basses and chose not to buy them.

I have played a hundred P basses. The moment I touched my 4003SW I knew it was something special. I had never beheld a Ric until that day. I didn't know what I was missing...

Flip it, get what you want. You're covered on a P bass, now get the Rickenbacker you want and play the snot out of all of them.

So I ended up trying two Rics at Wildwood Guitars, a Jetglo 4003S and a Walnut 4003. The staff at Wildwood is fantastic BTW, and their Ric 4003 prices are the best I have seen/heard. Anyway when the salesman opened the case of the Walnut Ric I thought I was sold for sure, but after playing them I ended up walking away without either one. Nothing against them really, they simply just did not wow me enough to convince me to sell a bass I already like to get one of them. If nothing else the experience showed me that I like Fender and Fender-inspired basses and should be happy with what I have.

But on a related note the guy I was visiting had a MusicMan Sterling (the USA Sterling, not the SUB or Sterling by MusicMan) that absolutely killed. I think I wouldn't mind finding a used one of those down the road.
