Seller wants his bass back?

I had a regret sell at one point and just kindly asked the buyer to please let me know if he ever decided to sell it. About a year later, he did just that and I purchased it back. I wouldn't have asked him to sell it back though, that's kind of strange. I agree with others that you are under no obligation either way. If you want to be super nice, help the guy out. If it is a hassle and you really like the bass, give a sincere apology and tell him you will let him know if you ever decide to sell it.

A few weeks is a bit much for sellers remorse to set in. How long should you feel obligated to not say a deal is a deal? I'd consider it after a few days, but once enough time goes by for you to do a mod, nope. Sometimes we have to own our poor decisions.

"A person relinquishes all ownership after sale" so it's up to you as a person, not a legal obligation.

That being said, I HAVE bought back a Cirrus I sold after FIVE YEARS and I traded another GOOD Peavey plus $500 cash, so we were both happy.

I sold a bass back in 2016. At the time, the bass held no sentimental value to me but over time it started to mean more to me by representing a particular time in my life. I've reached out to the guy several times over the years just to say if he ever plans to sell it to let me know, and he has never responded back even to say "no" or "okay." While I don't think I'm owed an answer, I definitely took the time to respond to all the questions he had before he bought the bass, so it's just annoying.

I've never been in this position before but I've known people who have been where the buyer had promised them first refusal if they ever decided to sell. Quelle surprise, this was not honoured and the desired bass was later seen for sale again with a new owner, the previous owner never having even received a courtesy call!

I would offer to swap for a similar condition Marcus Miller bass if he can find a replacement and $100 to pull the electronics out and restore the originals.

I have a pretty unique custom bass. The guy who commissioned it contacted me through the 2nd owner asking to buy it back. It's my main bass and I play it every day so I declined but if I ever sell it I'll definitely reach out to him first before putting it on the market. In your case I'd probably offer to swap for another MM bass and charge a fair amount for your labor and time replacing the pickups.

A few years back I traded with a guy for a 5 string bass that I needed pretty badly at the time. I played a number of shows with it over the years but as I got a couple of other 5's this one ended up sitting in the case. I missed my other one but I would have never thought about asking for it back, IMHO you don't do that. Fast forward to a few months ago and I made a comment about how I missed that bass and lo and behold the guy got hold of me expressing how he missed his and we promptly traded back. So that worked out for both of us.

It's up to you what you do here. Maybe it'll get you some good kharma or something.

I'm 65. Age has nothing to do with stupid. Jeez, sorry he made such a bone headed move. I absolutely cannot believe he didn't weigh that fact in his decision to sell. Just cause I'm a damn prince of a guy, I'd probably try to work out something, but I'd set a price and stick with it. On FB and CL, people are always coming up with BS sob stories to get a deal or undo sellers remorse. He ought to at least feel a little pinch to remind him that charity ain't necessarily free.

I traded a fellow an upscale bass last year. The one he got from me ended up on the west coast [afterwards] and he had purchased a 5 string bass that he discovered he did not like at all. He asked if he could buy his old bass from me and that's what happened. No problem. We live pretty close by so there was no shipping or complications to the whole thing.
For me, I was happy to buy a used Epi version of the Gibson bass he wanted back.

That's a tough decision unless you are absolutely mad for the bass, then it's an easy decision. I'll be honest, I am not sure how I would respond. The fact that you modified it even though it can be reversed is a big factor because even considering the desire to do "right" you're out an additional investment if you sell it back. Maybe sleep on it for the weekend. Good luck.

Yeah $100 covers new strings and part of my time and gas to go and get the bass in the first place. I think I paid $1200. I'm not interested in sticking it to this guy....just mulling the decision over. He is telling me now his son is mad which is not my problem. I liked the bass but its not irreplaceable although somewhat collectible...try to find another one right now whiteout having to pay $300 shipping. If I hadn't bought it I would have jumped on a mid 70's jazz that came up for $1500 ( it sold in less than an hour....I wasn't 100% sure of its originality) which is a bit of a piss off. I bolted in the preamp and pups but the rear pup is DOA (bought from a fellow TB'er) so I never did get to give it a good try. I'll probably put the stock pups back in this afternoon and do that. I was going to upgrade my '13 deluxe at first but decided to do the MM at the last minute.

I would return it to him. It's the positive thing to do.

$1400 CAD. Is a pretty good price, but not crazy good that it that the guy would go through the trouble to buy it back and re sell it. $1300-1500 USD is the current range. So I don't think that's his motivation. Honestly I would expect this kind of thing from someone in their teens or early 20s, I've parted with lots of stuff that I wish I had kept that's life. If you like the bass keep it. If you sell it back to the guy be prepared to see it up for sale again in the future, sounds like a grown up baby that can't make an adult decision.
