Selling your first bass

i understand the OP's pain. my first bass was a mid 90s MIM Jazz. played the hell out of it, and i have yet to unload it even though i never play it anymore. realized i prefer bigger necks, and with a Rick, a precision copy, and a few T-40s i always have something else i'd rather play. i should unload it since i never play it, but man... it's hard.

I understand the situation faced by the OP.

I still have my first bass, a Ric 4003 I bought heavily used in 1986. Every once in a while I think about trimming the herd and selling it. It gets very little playing time as I have a number of basses I like better. Still, I've had it since the start and occasionally it's fun to play it for a change of pace.

If I sold it, I'd get a bass I used more. But then I'd also have given up my first bass. I always play it and end up deciding to keep it.

OP - don't sell it. Come on it's THE first bass. :D You'll never get as much money for it You would like to (sentimental factor or however they call it now :D )

Mine was(I mean is :D) a crappy Rockwood by Hohner, and what it does, is looking good hanging on the wall. :D

It was a crappy cheap P-bass and I sold it for next to nothing. The money didn't get me very far and I miss it :bawl:

To make it worse, I sold it to a guy that I still keep in touch with. He bought it thinking 'I might give bass a go'... He never did give it a go, and its been under his bed ever since!!!! I try and buy it back from him, but he still thinks 'I might give bass a go', so he won't sell it. Its been under a bed for 5 years now :crying:

I sold my first bass, one of the really bad Squier Jazz's that comes in the starter pack. The thing had a bad neck, bad frets, and was also ugly red. I sold it with a Peavey TKO 115, which I actually do sort of miss. That bass I will never miss though. Besides, I like to think of my Gibson as my first "real" bass, and that will NEVER be sold.

My first bass? Gone within about 15 months and I dont miss it one bit. Memphis P-bass copy but with some weird non-p pickup on it.
Second bass? Had it MAYbe 2 years, dont miss it at all (kramer duke-aluminum necked steinberger lookalike)
After that were the one's I wouldnt mind re-aquiring. Already replaced #3 which is the ever-popular T-40.

I'm kinda sentimental about my instruments but not 100%. I'm in the process of trading/selling the bass I've owned the longest ever. I need to fund a new amp and its the most expendable one in my stable. To some extent, I'll miss it because I've had it for so long but, unless I win a lottery, something has to go.

I still have my first bass, and its my main player still after 8 years and after a lot of other basses have come and gone.

Every once in awhile, it'll sit on its stand for a month or two while I play my new favorite toy, but I always go back to it.

My new favorite toy is a G&L. :D

I read all these threads with the "life will never be good for you if you sell it" theme and held off selling mine for as long as I could. Eventually decided to risk it.

Turns out, life goes on and is even better if you use the money to buy better gear.
