Selling your only bass.

As everyone else has said, CONGRATS!! Nothing like having a little one around (mine's 5 now, but hey, he'll always be my baby!). To your original question... Yes, I had to sell off all my gear this year due to a job loss. Music is great, but family first. One day when things have recovered again I'll get another bass, but until then I'll be patient.

I have a Tascam CDBT1. It's a bass practice CD player. Dp a search. It will at least let you hear yourself play (and won't wake up the baby). You can hear your bass through head phones. It has a couple of effects and it works really well for learning songs. Let me know if you need it. Just shoot me a PM. Congrats on the baby! Mine is 3 months old. I wouldn't trade her for all the bass gear in the world!

Haha I do plan on teaching the youngin some music theory as he grows up. Aswell as some sports, baseball and the such.

Thats why I wanted to have a boy honestly haha.

I have 15 basses ... no way I would go to zero. With basses like olp, squier, and SX pretty much every can afford a beater bass.

Exactly. The high end stuff might have to go and while I'd hate to see it go, it wouldn't be nearly as tough a decision as deciding whether the OLP or the SX would be the one I'd keep.

I'm thinking the SX is the keeper. But then the flamed maple on the OLP makes it look expensive. But I love the tone and vintage vibe of the SX. But...

Hey having a baby may take a bit of adjustment, but it doesn't mean I have to leave life! Cripes, empty a drawer on the dresser and use it for a baby bed and use the crib money for a nice SX! The kid won't care.

I did the same thing about a year back. I miss it to this day but now I'm focusing on my career. Once things settle down a bit, I'll replace the gear that I sold.

I had to sell my last bass to get me through college. I as laid off in December, and ran up my credit cards to be able to get through school, job interviews, etc. and now that I'm working, I just got my credit card paid off and I'll be saving up for the right bass soon.

Sorry to hear about the bass going bye-bye, but I've done it too. It sucks, but better things await. Congrats on the kid.

Yes she would! I'm trying to imagine what my wife's reaction would be to my saying "Honey I need a new bass. Can we stick the kid in a drawer for a few months?" BTW, she TOTALLY supports my playing and has even bought me bass stuff as gifts. But if it came doen to a bass or a crib....no contest. Fortunately we weren't in the position to have to make that choice when the baby was born a few months ago, but still.....
Anyway....the kid will open you up to a whole new world. NOTHING in the world is a better feeling than making your own kid smile.

Long story short.. I got into big time problems with Oxycontin and sold my only bass. I regret it everyday. It was only a cheap SX P-Bass but I loved that Bass..

This is a good lesson to everyone.. don't do drugs. For real.

Been there... 'Different time & ride.., same result.

If I had've known 30 years ago even 1/10th of what I've learned on TalkBass in the past six months, things would've turned out VERY different. (Which is why I'll be joining the ranks of TB's supporting members soon.)

OP. You put your family first. This is what a real man does.

However, you mustn't allow your playing to atrophy. It may prove to be the prime way in which you feed your family one day.

Please get your hands on any available string hanger (even an acoustic guitar) and continue to improve your skills.

I believe that for any musician, playing a musical instrument forms a therapeutic keystone of their self-identity and sense of self-worth.

The foundation of one's ability to cope with life's problems is eroded if self-esteem is allowed to take a nose-dive.

The preservation and further strengthening/blossoming of your inner self through a progression of personal accomplishments will serve you well as the head of your household--and as a parent.

May you & yours always have what you truly need, and much of what you want.

As stated above grab a cheap old acoustic guitar. I usually only have 1 bass at a time , and i will sale it when i wnat somethng else , leaving me a few weeks with out a bass usually. I just have a 6 string nylon full size acoustic i got at good will for 10$ to play in that time. It keeps your chops up , and guitar is not that bad

My dog got cancer during the summer and I had to sell my CIJ Sting for $450 on EBay. I needed the cash asap. I have since bought a Hofner Icon on credit and may return it for a Squier CV Jazz. But man, it sucked not having a bass. I had to pick up the guitar for a bit.
