Anyone care to share any insights about how a pickup for a violin is and isn't the same as for an upright, aside from the obvious size and frequency differences? I've got a sixth-grade student who plays violin for whom I'd like to get an inexpensive, 'non-invasive' pickup. I like my SixRounds.com $50 pickup for my upright, was just wondering if anyone make something similar, maybe even f-hole mounting, for a violin.
It's a bit of a long story - the short version is that he and I together are the pit orchestra for a show at his middle school. (I'm playing piano) and his sound gets lost when the going gets loud. NB: I'm not teaching him violin, which I don't play, just accompanying the show on piano and may even switch to my upright for a spot or two if I can figure out the logistics.
A microphone is an obvious idea, but anyone here has any wisdom to share about a pickup in this situation, I'm all ears.
