Double Bass Semi-OT: Real Book: Rock or Pop

I've used the 'regular' Real Book, and I also like the Vocal one - I like seeing the lyrics and the collections are somehow better to me.

I'm now trying to decide on whether to order the Real POP book or Real ROCK book - anyone care to comment on the tune selections in either/each?

My reason for wanting one, or <sigh> both is that I'm tired of going online every time a student talks to me about a song, and am hoping just to have some things here.

You should be able to see the song lists online - take a look and see what you like the most.

I can tell you the Christmas book is pretty useful this time of year.

My trouble is that I don't even know what they're wanting to learn these days, so the song list - I did go there, on the publisher's website, is really lost on me.

And I had the same thought about the Christmas book, and have already ordered one and it's supposed to arrive tomorrow.

Just a thought….but it’s one thing for students to chose a song to learn, but sometimes it’s better to give them songs based upon the specific song’s ability to teach them something.

For example, Autumn Leaves is a great song to learn because what it can teach you. Not exactly a famous song amongst the yutes.

Just listen to, and write up, the tune in question...Everything is on the Internet For Free.<sigh>
I do this all the time for my students - It's why I make the Big Buck$.

@g-dude, I do pick out most of what my students do, but sometime's they're like, "Hey, I know you didn't give me this one but I want to play it and I'm having some trouble - can you help me?" and I try not to say No to those requests.

@Don Kasper, would that I had the kind of time you do to write up tunes.

Nowadays, you can just Google the song and "chords", bass tab, bass sheet music, etc. Often, there are bass playthings on YouTube with the music and/or tabs.

Probably better than the real books, which, as @AGCurry said, likely won't have current songs
