Semi transparent stain

lol.... wow... so many questions... I thought it would be easy...lol.... actually I was looking at Minwax and saw some of their transparent stains and thought....hmmmmm that color would look nice....

what I am looking for is the grain to show through... I was going to do a natural finish but then saw this and... once again...hmmmmmm

You:

1) stripped the bass already - right?
2) like the wood since it's got good gran and detail - right?
3) think it has no ugly places you need to conceal - right?
4) found a tint or color you like - right?

There are several ways to go about this. I know you want simple and perfect - but that may be an inversely proportionate situation. Time spend getting the surface prepared are golden - and you cannot shortcut this unless you are a metal player and grunge and runs and gouges in the body look good to you.

With just a LITTLE MORE info, you can be helped a lot better.

Aha! We's got something to see now. Thanks.

Nice blue, BTW.

OK - get the body spotlessly clean and use nothing that's ever been used to clean windows, cars, tools or grease, oil or silicon (including fabric softeners, etc) to wash the rags you'll use from this point on.

You need to be very careful to nor contaminate the surface as it will create fish-eyes and they aren't a positive thing.

Don't touch your face with your hands and don't forget to wash your hands with dishwashing liquid detergent before you then handle the naked wood.

Here's the place it gets 'iffy' though: Is there a sealer/sanding coat on the wood? Most all factory made guitars will have this on them and it may be problematic to the final finish.

If it's there in places and sanded off in others, the color coat is gonna be uneven and splotchy.

The product you've chosen is a good one - especially for furniture - on a bass it will be very interesting.

When the depth and saturation of the color is right where you want it - you can lock it all down with their clear spray polyurethane.

Here's the good part - any product by MinWax is going to work with any other MinWax product and not going to wrinkle, bend, bag or sag at the knees.

I think you're on to a nice color and finish - just know up front that it will not have the hardness and depth of the factory polyester catalyzed coating.

Thanks for the input/advice/directions Joe!!!!!

I know the sealer coat you speak of... once I got through the color coat there was a redish tint to the wood. I kept sanding it off till there was nice pure wood color. :)

so hopefully it will be good to go!!!!!

also I am not expecting this to be a perfect bass.... this is just an experiment for me at this point. I wanted a new bass but unfortunately I can't afford one... so I decided to redo what I had....

ok enough rambling here....lol got the info and will follow instructions accordingly. I will post pice on the other thread of the work being done :)
