I know bill, I work with him at MF. As far as my experience, the E835 is a lot clearer, where as the 58 seams as though there is a sock over your head. Plus the e835s can be used as a vocal or an instrument mic. The SM58 mic was a great microphone .... 50 years ago. Electro Voice also makes some great mics as well. My favorites are the sennheisers though.
The 58 has been the most iconic microphone from being seen on stage, pictures of performers. What sells the 58 is its repetition not it's quality.
It is warmer. Way too warm and there is the problem for me with either the 58 or 835.. I have to spend to much EQ to make them passable...I used one for 15 years. To me, it seemed warmer sounding than the SM58. I really like mine. Plus its Black.
Oops I Have the 945 series and it is quite nice.
