I've got four. JUST four; a fretless four string(34" scale), an acoustic fretless five(35"), a fretted four(34") and a fretted five(35'). I've spent the last year practicing like a maniac on the newest and just picked up the others today to remember they're all fabulous instruments. I feel really guilty and ungrateful. I see some of you guys with scores of basses and just don't understand how you can appreciate them all. How do you do it?!

I do better with 3 or so. Otherwise I spend more time fussing with them than playing.

You appreciate the collection, not necessarily the individual basses. I went from 20+ basses to three. I don't miss having a herd, although there is one I'd like to have back.
Yes, some are to muse but other are workhorses. Some are recording basses. For doing shows, they become kinda like outfits. One night it's the Explorer then next week we'll play a P-bass. And you don't take the Ironbird to the country gig.

I have five, and I feel like that is just too many.

I'm pushing 10 right now. I love having the variety. I'll play a different bass every day of the week, sometimes play multiple basses when I'm farting around with recording so I can get some different sounds. About the only thing I don't love about having so many basses that I play mostly concurrently is string change time. It costs me way too much money in strings lol.
I don't have scores at any given time (12 currently), but I definitely have (and do) appreciate every one of them. One just does. Each has its own sound, feel, story, purpose...
But where do you get the time?? All mine are so different I need to almost warm up again on each one??
I have 30, 21 to 24" scale. My seniors uke group meets twice a week on Zoom so I rotate between all of them easily.
30!!! That's not a collection, that's a shop without an "open" sign on the front door!!!
I am at my comfortable limit right now. 3 P basses... 34" fretted, 34" fretless and 32" fretted. I am happy. I pick them all up during the week, I play 2 of them regularly and have gigged with all of them. If I had another, I would lose interest in one for sure. So my new rule will be, if another comes in... one has to go out. (I'm sure I will break that rule, lol)
I have 3 Pbasses and 1 Jazz, I was alternating them from gig to gig but looks like them days are over...
I have five and justify each one with different applications. Three are on display and two are packed away, and I regularly take flak from non-musicians for having the three.
