Seriously need help with a P bass --- which one???

I'll throw the Roadworn P into this discussion... You can find them for $800 or less used, and they sound and play so well! If you don't have an issue with the relic finish, it will do exactly what you want. With a good setup, they are great basses for rock/indie music. My 2 cents.

Try a 50's Classic also - a fantastic Precision.

I second this! These really are top of the line instruments, and can't be beat by anything in their price range. Fender really knocked it out of the ballpark with their Classic series instruments. Amazing quality!

Buy a used, mid 1980's Made in Japan P. My main is one of these, they're all over Craigslist for $500. And they're better than the USA fenders at the time (not exaggerating). Swap the pups, (which you'd probably do anyway). They're made very, very well.
