setting up computer for recording only

Hi, not sure if this is in the right forum, but here goes.

I've recently got a new computer and am looking to keeping my old computer purely as a computer for recording music onto. With this in mind, I want to be able to remove all of the software on the computer that i'm not going to need for recording music.

Do any of you have tips on how to do this safely and easily?

Any other advice on this subject would also be useful as i'm pretty new to home recording. I'll probably be using Audacity and my computer's running Windows 98 2nd ed through an old Athlon processor and a cheap sound card.

Cheers

There is a lot to think about when setting up a pc for recording. Go to Add/Remove Programs and start removing the software that you don't need. Since you probably bought it from some big box store ( dell included) there is going to be a lot to remove. This is only the first step! I don't want to go into detail here as there are some things that need to be done that without the proper instructions could casue serious problems with the pc. Check out this site, it has a LOT of information regarding the subject. Before I go - if the pc has Vista on it do yourself a big favor and remove it and install XP - you'll be much happier!!! Trust me. Feel free to ask me questions - I do this for a living

If you want to be serious about making *real* recordings, instead of using an old computer for it, use a new computer for it. Unless you don't have the money and your current computer is good enough for it...

I'm still using Win98SE on my DAW (if it ain't broke..). To get rid of Internet Explorer I use a program called IERadicator. I don't know how safe it is to run it on a system that's been up and running for awhile (probably no problem), but I've always used it first thing after a fresh install of Windows.

Your heading down a long frustrating path. Try an M-audio delta 44 sound card. Put as much RAM you can in that out dated piece of junk (No offense) and get a program that was made around the same time as your version of windows. A old cakewalk probably would be best. Then close your eyes pray for a new computer.
