Hi guys, so here goes:
I bought my first active bass yesterday (Yamaha RBX series) and I absolutely love it - great action, nice, full and punchy, and most of all very clean sounding too; no noise whatsoever!
However, I had a band practice earlier on today at some dedicated rehearsal rooms, and the bass just totally turned into something else. Firstly, it distorted like crazy - the distortion becoming more severe the harder I picked the strings. Secondly, the bass almost took on the personality of a passive bass with really faulty wiring - the sound abruptly cuts out when the pots are turned to full, the pots themselves crackle too, most controls are rendered useless, and the tone generally becomes intermittent and unpredictable. There was no mains hum or static noise though.
I immediately thought it was the battery (still being the one supplied when I bought the bass), so I replaced it with a new one but it did not help at all. I also tried different inputs on the amp (active+passive) and also going through the line-in of the PA but it was still the same. I didn't have a DI box at hand to try. Now that the bass was unplayable, I wound up looking like an idiot for most of the rehearsal by "playing bass" on a standard six-string electric that happened to be lying about.
Frustrated by all this, I took the bass straight back to the dealer after the rehearsal and told them the problem. They proceeded to test the bass out on several amps, checked the wiring etc., and guess what? It was absolutely fine! The bass played well through everything - no noise/distortion or intermittence, just a really nice, clean, full sound! The wiring and electronics all seemed to be in pristine condition, no dry contacts, loose connections etc. and all the controls worked perfectly. It was as just good as it was on the previous day when I bought it. The guy at the store couldn't say much about it, and I was totally baffled, and so I ended up looking like an idiot once again.
I got home and tested it on my own rigs and it still played to perfection. I even tried shaking the bass violently whilst it was connected to see if it was an undetected wiring issue, but the bass has no problems whatsoever as far as I can tell.
My guess is that the problem is at the place where I rehearse - the building has an known issue with grounding and electrical isolation and it is primarily due to the fact that there is an active train line running several feet directly above it. Most of the amplification equipment there emits a strange UFO-like sound when the gain is turned up.
Although, to my belief all active circuitry on electric guitars/bass have an isolated ground, but is this really true? Would there be a suitable workaround for this problem by using a ground-lifting device of some sort? My main concern is that the same issue would resurface if played at a certain venue with the same electrical problem, and most times I don't have the convenience of taking a back-up instrument.
I will greatly appreciate it if any of you guys can throw some light on this matter.
