Double Bass Sewing Gig Bag Handles

hello. i know this isn't bass repair, but i have a used mooradian bag that has had one of the handles ripped off. i've done some sewing before and don't think any of the household needles i use are strong enough to get through the seatbelt material and all the tough parts of the bag.

has anyone tried to do this before? if so it would really but a couple more years onto my bag and help me save a bit more money in the long run.

Absolutely. I've actually gotten heavy duty canvas needles at Walmart or Kmart, but only because fabric stores have become more rare- they are your best bet and will generally have higher quality and a better selection.

You should also be able to find heavy project thread, designed for canvas or other heavy materials. IME mending seam rips in my old tent camper in the 70's, I learned that using a decent pair of long nose pliers was often most effective at moving the needle through multiple layers of heavy material, rather than using thimbles, to avoid injuring fingers.

You are wise to keep on top of bag maintenance, you can get a lot of years out of them. Regardless of quality, they all can give at seams or tear due to heavy use or accidental stress.

Given the sucess I've had trying to mend my own clothes, sewing the handles back on a bass bag would frighten me. I'd look for a good cobbler to do it for you; I wouldn't think he'd charge much, as it'd only take him a few minutes...

Larger dry cleaners that do repairs and alterations often have the heavy duty machines necessary to do such repair work.

Don't forget the shoe repair guys. I've never had shoes repaired, but I've brought them other weird sewing and riveting jobs.

Ha ha ha!!! I hate to state the 'obvious', but I'm not one to ignore the "elephant in the room" when I walk in. The first thing I thought when I saw the title was.. why not take it to an upholstery shop (yes, I've had success doing that) or if not available, take it to a luggage repair shop. Both of those businesses have massively heavy-duty sewing equipment.
