Seymor duncan for jazz bass

Aloha everybody, I searched the pickup reviews and threads and didn't find what I was looking for, in fact i'm not sure what i'm looking for. I have a MIM fender jazz bass with active vintage emg's, they sound wonderful but they are too bright for me. I enjoy reggae, latin, punk, metal, hip hop, blugrass pretty much anything really but country. I live in hawaii so probably mostly reggae and latin is a lot of what I play. I was wondering if anyone had any info on seymour duncan basslines or quarter pounders, The quarter pounders is what I was leaning towards so if anyone has any experience with these basses and pickups let me know what you think.

Aloha

I have a set of Hot Stack for Jazz (STK-J2) in my JJ bass and get a variety of good tones.

I use 500k volume pots and a Fender TBX tone.

I have never used them, but a lot of people like the QPs as well.

I have a set of Duncan SJB1'S they are based on the 60's Jazz bass pickups . Nice and fat/deep sounding great for what you are going to be playing. I have found the 1/4 pounders sound very industrial to me(IMHO YMMV) very bright and clangy great for slap or Metal but too hot and brite for my taste.

Ya know ... you might consider going the PJ route. You would replace the pickguard but IIRC, The MIM's are already routed for it so no body mod - you would sure want to check that out first!

A good split P speaks with an authority that no J can...

If you stick with the J's then I'll have to give a big +1 to the SJB1 - IMO it's the best J bass pickup that Duncan has ever made...

I'm a big fan of Vintage Vibe Guitars work. Pricier than Duncan but hand built to your spec and Pete's pickups are very, very quiet. His shielding technique is way out front IMO.

I have SD Hot Stack Jazz on mine (with "Seymour Duncan" covers, not "Basslines" - they're from the 90s). I used stacked 500K pots for individual tone and volume, plus a master volume (plus a sweep - I know, it's a bit overkill!). I find this allows me to get all sorts of sounds by adjusting the volume and tone for each p'up. A regular V/V/T doesn't allow you to use all the sounds available from these p'ups. I can get close to a P sound, all the way to the brightest bridge sounds and all stops in between. Both on full, with a little tone rolled off on the neck p'up is huge. Mine are on a walnut body, with a rosewood fingerboard so YMMV.

with both pickups full up, either tone knob affects both pickups, not just one.

(to the OP) you might look into an onboard preamp/EQ to get the sound you're looking for (boosted lows and rolled-off highs, for example).

Ok so I was looking at getting a P/J bass but love the way my J feels and plays it's a dream to me, but the split P/J is actually the tone I want. The MIM fender J's have a space for a P/J neck pickup is this correct. also if it is my Jbass is VVT as far as my know will the controls fit the Jbass Body from the P/J swap? Thank you all for your help.

Aloha
