In the never ending quest for perfect tone, aka constant screwing around with, aka modding my Mexican Fender Jazz bass.

I've just put a SD QP P-Bass pickup alongside my SQ QP Jazz pickup, and now have a small amount of hum.

Reading around on TB it seems I should swap out the QP Jazz pup for a SD Hot for Jazz (STK-J2) as that will be hum-canceling, like the P-Bass pup.

Is that right?

Shielding is your friend. I shielded my P/J with a QP Jazz in it, and it's dead quiet now. If you want to spend more money on a replacement pickup, go for it, but there are cheaper options out there.

That's right. Shielding is not the answer.

you are correct, you should swap the QP Jazz pup with a hum-cancelling Jazz pup. The P pickup itself does its own hum-cancellation, leaving the single coil jazz without a RW/RP partner to cancel the hum.

Since your P pickup is a QP... get the loudest hum-cancelling jazz pickup to match it.

BTW, is that a single volume or a pickup blend pot?

Yeah, I've ordered an SD Hot Stack for the bridge - was the loudest I could find.

Is just a single volume - I'm a simple guy and like the bass to be full-tilt, then adjust EQ on the amp.

qp is a single coil, its meant hum. you need a hot stack or some other stacked or split coil jazz pickup for the bridge pup
