SG & EB Bass Club

Thanks! Gotta look into those, though I still would like a smaller tuner and pegs. I guess as long as they are 1/2 inch or if they come with their own inserts/sleeves, I don't mind the drilling. I can tell the problem with these is that they weren't properly aligned or in center with the hole, that puts a lot of pressure on the gears.

Edit... Just looked into the those 142 C and they're running around $95 in Amazon. Kind of lipstick on a pig, know what I mean?
Check Reverb. $53.70 +$5.00 shipping seller is SportHiTech. (or go to their site, I got some Hipshot ultralite USAs for a really good price there for a different bass.

My EB0 has developed tuning machine issues, getting tight even after cleaning and greasing, the gears seem to be pressing to tight against the worm gear and there is lots of friction, wear and grinding. I want to replace them, my question is, has anyone installed smaller tuners all around? I know the big clover leafs are traditional but I’m not a fan of such big tuners, also I want to stay cheap (cheap bass) Anyone with thoughts or ideas?

I used a set of Hipshot Ultralites, and chose the mini-clover tuners. I like them.

I used Hipshot Ultralites, ‘Y Key’ (look like regular guitar tuners). There are also ‘Mini Clovers’ available. Not the cheapest, but light (which was why I switched — really helped with the neck dive).

‘Lollipop’-style is also available if buying the Made in USA version of the Ultralites (which costs extra over their "licensed" Ultralite versions [meaning, the licensed ones are made overseas, which is fine]). Lollipops are a little smaller than the standard cloverleafs. USA version also offers the ‘Y Key Short’, which are in tighter to the headstock. I actually used these Y Key Shorts, now that I think about it.

Be sure to check the headstock hole size (ask here, for example) on the Epiphone EB-0 as these tuners come in two hole sizes, 1/2" or 3/8". The Gibson is 1/2", but I don’t know about for an Epiphone.

My Epi EB-0 is my tight space/backup bass. I put a Hipshot bridge on it. Done.(OK, put DTFs on it too).

Just got home from dropping off the SG and my Epiphone Newport to get some work done.
I’m finally getting the Novak EB-BS installed in the SG. I have high hopes for this pickup so I’m excited to hear if it delivers what I want.
The Newport is getting a mudbucker wired series/parallel and having some annoying fret buzz addressed. I already installed some Hipshot lollipops on it.
To be honest, after living with the Newport for a bit ithas ended up being a disappointment in the qc department. I’m gonna throw some money at it anyway and see if that turd can be polished.

My Dad had an expression: It's like putting whipped cream on "poop". Doesn't help the "poop"; ruins the whipped cream.
Hope it works out for you.

What besides the fret buzz are the main QC issues at this point?

The pickups are wired out of phase. Some blemishes in the paint. At the right angles you can obviously see where the body was joined together. Nothing too bad, but disappointing considering my other Epiphones are all issue free.

Quick question regarding the EB-0: should one of the bridge posts be grounded? I pulled the posts out today to get some measurements and I noticed that there isn't a grounding wire going to any of them. In fact there isn't even a hole drilled from the electronics cavity to any of the post holes.

That settles it then.

Q: Are you Geddy?

A1: Yes. Then no ground is needed - on any part of the circuit

A2: No. Well, then, have I got a sweet video for you…

Actual answer: Yes, your bridge post (or at least the bridge itself, somehow) should be grounded

Speaking of videos, I just came across this vid on that Artec alnico pickup that has gotten a lot of discussion here (apologies if it’s been posted previously). Includes install with push-pull mod, and then, after the first third of the video, there’s an extensive A-B comparison with the stock pickup.

(warning 1: to lovers of the stock EB-0, you probably won’t like hearing this guy‘s opinion of the stock pickup [basically he just repeatedly says that the stock pup is anemic, so if you really don’t want to hear that, I wouldn’t watch])
(warning 2: caution, slap from 15:00 to 18:30)

Seems like the humble Artec works pretty well! I was considering one of these back when I was looking for a replacement pickup for my SG Bass, but knowing the Artec had non-Gibson spring spacing kinda turned me off and I eventually went in a different direction. After actually hearing/seeing it in action here though, I’d be much less concerned. Anyway, next time… :bassist:

Over the years I learned to filter the reviews/opinions; sometimes what is not good for the reviewer is good for me, and vice versa.
What I didn't like about SG basses was the look, the aesthetic factor. After I got the first one (the Epiphone EB3), I began to see their charm.

That said, I really like mud tone, that cames out from these basses.
