Just got my bridge… very nice craftsmanship. One thing, the item I received has Allen head screws and not the slotted ones shown above. Are these the correct screws (2 sets)? I contacted the seller - supposed to be a Hipshot authorized seller.

I do like the looks of the slotted screws better…I know trivial! I’m thinking about going to hardware store and replacing. This is aluminum. Will SS screws be OK? Anyone here know if they’re compatible? Thx!

All the pics on the Hipshot page have allen head, as does mine (which I believe came from the same seller as your picture).

I have a shielding question regarding my EB-O copy. Hope it's okay to ask this here. I found the bass noisy electronically, so I copper-shielded the cavity. I didn't bother doing the wiring channel or the control cavity because it's done with shielded cable. It might be a bit better than it was unshielded, but I still find there's a much higher noise level than any of my other basses. I've had someone make a suggestion that I should shield inside the plastic cover, which you can see in post #8154 above. There's zero clearance on the sides to add shielding, so I'd only be doing the inside top of the cover. Does this sound like a reasonable idea. I seem to remember reading something years ago about not shielding the inside of Strat single coil pickups relating in some way to magnetic current eddy.....I don't understand the physics, but it sounded like there might be some scientific basis for it. Since this EB-O copy is basically a single coil design, does the same thing apply, or is there a reason not to do it?

I did a similar shielding with copper tape and I ran mine into the control cavity with the wire channel all taped. I then tied a single point to the ground on the input jack. Whisper quiet.
Not sure that would help you but you're half way there so should be pretty easy.

Copper shielding a bass is always a good idea. Ideally the pickup routes, the control cavity and the control cavity cover should all be shielded with conductive paint or copper or aluminum foil with a conductive adhesive. In an ideal world the control cavity shielding will have contact with the control ground wire as well. Typical shielding job…

As a side note - if you only hear the noise when touching the strings, then it’s most likely a grounding not shielding issue.

As for shielding impacting the magnetic field of the pickups, I wouldn’t be surprised if it did, but the proper response to that argument would be - so what. There are plenty of bass and guitar pickups housed in metal covers or that have metal trim rings, the strings impact the magnetic field as well, I don’t see anybody advocating getting rid of those items.

I'm FAR from an expert on this topic, but if your shielding isn't connected to ground somehow, it isn't doing you any good. If you've got a multimeter, check for continuity from the shield to the sleeve of your output jack.

Yes I forgot the control cavity cover. You're basically building a metal can known as a Faraday cage.
 
Thanks for all the suggestions on my noise issue. I'm pretty sure I have enough foil left to do the control cavity, so I'll do that, plus grounding. This isn't a noise related to touching the strings, so I'm pretty sure it relates to radiated noise/EMF. I appreciate all your help.

This post is a little confusing. You seem to be making contradictory statements. Perhaps it is a terminology thing, but we’ll see.

When people talk about the cavity, it is the control cavity they mean. So if you didn’t shield the most obvious location of injected interference (the control cavity) what cavity do you mean?

Of course you should; assuming you also shielded the rest of the cavity (and connected it to ground). Consider this- canned Tuna lasts forever on a shelf inside the can (when sealed). How long will it last when you open the top and put it back in the cupboard? So the lid is pretty important, no?

Well, we will need more details here on your particular copy model. But in general, no. It is not a single coil design. It is a humbucking pickup (‘Mudbucker…’). By definition it is a dual coil pickup
 
Maybe I haven't described the situation according to what you're expecting. When I said cavity in my original post, I was referring to the cavity routed in the body where the pickup is located.

I assumed that because all the wiring from the actual pickup and into the control cavity was done with shielded cable, that it was unlikely to be an antenna for radiated noise, and that the receptor point would be the actual pickup. I understand now that you're telling me that's not so.

I do think though that this is a single coil pickup.....If you look at the top picture in post 8154, you can see that there is only one coil involved.

In any case, the forum members have given me some valuable insights which I appreciate. I will be copper-foiling the remainder of the wire path and control cavity, and checking with a multimeter to ensure that there's continuity at all points of the shield to the negative side of the output jack.

These things are rare, and the few with the on-board fuzz circuit like the one in the ad are nothing I've ever seen IRL. I know of them, but...that's it.

In other news, Epi is back from the shop and sure enough the Hipshot sports wrench bolts, so I really don't know when and why they might have switched to the screwdriver ones seen in the picture a couple of pages ago.
