To me, La Bellas feels way too stiff. A lot of people like exactly that.

Me! I have their DTFs 45-105 installed on my SG, along with a Hipshot bridge. I also have the short scale La Bella 760F-MUS thru-body flats installed on my Schecter Banshee. They're lower tension, if you have a thru-body bridge. .043, .060, .082, .104 gauges.

I guess I check off both boxes...mid-90s Epi EB-0, still have the stock pup in it and actually sounds pretty good EQed. Debating a new 4-wire with a push-pull for switching.

The 1967 EB2 started out life as a cherry s/b. In the early punk days, at the end of a show, somebody took a hammer to it! upper f-hole was gone, and there were holes all over the place. Luckily, the roadies took it back to the shop, where it sat in ignominious squalor for 12 or 13 years before I got it. The body has been reasonable restored, but she'll never have a clear finish again. Right now, she is a blue over white, which over the last 30(!) years has grown on me. Pup is straight into the jack right now. The sound is unique...plenty of thud, but more mids than you'd expect. I do have all of the original parts, and eventually I'll get it back together.

What strings on the very cool EB2? Pressure Wounds are great for more bite and less thud, low finger noise especially if you pick near the bridge (i do).

Quite the opposite on an EB-3. No ifs, ends or buts. The "choked" position is a Mudbucker sans mud. Pretty much an extreme LPF, in real life.

If you were to entirely remove the choke from the circuit, or play an EB-0 which doesn't sport a choke you'd still have a ton of mud for the ole 'bucker.

Both the choke and the baritone switch were aimed at taming the 28 -32 KOhm beast that resides under the bottom of the neck on all 1960-72 EB basses...

You can easily EQ the mud out on my 65 Epi Newport but it sounds different than EB0....its a 2nd gen with early rare slab body....semi parametric EQ and enhance knob on my Eden Metro make it possible....plus GHS Pressure Wounds (which my E started wavering darn it).

I don't own an SG Bass, but have GHS Precision Flats on my EB-3 and Pyramids on my EB-2. My recommendation would give the latter a *very* slight edge.



You may want to measure the distances involved, but I believe that they should fit.

On a somewhat different note, do you use TI flats on your other basses ? To me they are loose-feeling even on a 34", scared to imagine how they would feel on a 30.5"...

My $0.02 only...

Ive been wanting to try GHS Precision flats on my bros 65 Newport but the Pressure Wounds on it are very open sounding, plenty of zing...Have the flats on a Bronco with Lawrence L-250 blade, sounds really good (great pickup too).

D'addario ECB81S on my short scale Epi EB-0. Maybe a bit more modern sounding than some other flats. I've found D'addarios to be very consistent in quality.

Note: Me and some others have found Rotosound short scale flats not working well with the neck pickup on SG-style basses.

Just looking at the gauges would make me stay away from the Rotos, which I liked in long scale guise on some other basses...

In all honesty, once I'm done with my ongoing bass collection purge, there won't be anything left with the flats. They are just not my thing.

For rounds on the Jr , I've continued to put Gibson BriteWires on , I find them to be a nice string.

I like D'addario rounds on my EB's for the brightness but I use flats on my Rivoli which gives a nice almost upright tone. I have always used D'addario or Roto's on most my basses. I do have some Labella taped I'm getting ready to try on a P-Bass I'm building from parts because of the long scale I want to see how I like them.

Yeah that one has been sitting on Reverb for ages. If it were the white one that Daisley used on "Blizzard Of Ozz" it might have sold by now...

Great player IMO, with an interesting bass collection to boot...

I know the info is buried way back in this thread, but could some of you tell which flatwounds you use on your SG bass?

Also, the Thomastik flats for short scale say they're 32 inches.

Is this too long for an SG bass?

Any info appreciated.

Currently really enjoying the LaBella DTFs. I like the stiffness, and the tone is great for old school thump, but retain some definition. I have the medium scale, because my SG has the Babicz bridge, which adds a little length behind the saddles.

I had the GHS P-flats, which sounded good on the A/D/G strings, but the E string disappeared in the mix. Those are now on a LP Jr DC bass and sound great there, no issues with the E.

No experience with the TIs on the SG, but I find their full scale a bit floppy, so I can't imagine using them on a shortie.

I put DTFs on my Hipshot bridge equipped '09 EB-0. Brand new, the E string was , so I salvaged an EBCF E from my Thunderbird and all is well.

That seems like an interesting pairing. From what I read about the EBCFs, they're pretty lively, almost like a roundwound. Kind of the opposite of the DTFs, isn't it?

Yes, but the pup in the '09 EB-0 is "less than lively" and the extra 'punch'(?)of the EBCF allows the E to actually be heard. The string had been on the TBird ~a year so it had lost some of its 'zing'.

my very first bass was a Gibson EB-O and I kick myself every time I think about it and how I traded it in on a piece of firewood by mistake but recently I was donated the same type bass only it was an Epi, the headstock had been snapped off somehow and I figured to make a wall hanger. However I have many parts and pieces and descided to take a neck of unknown origin and remove frets to make a monster frettless SG bass with vintage Dimarzios and a thunderbird soap bar added to the already large tone of the mudbucker . It is still an ongoing project but im pleased with its playability and tone as well as the way it even appears rather Gibsonesque if you will with the shape of headstock resembling an old ripper or V bass . Here are a few pics of it I hope you folks enjoy em !
