Hey there. If anyone is watching this thread, do you know how to run the serials on these basses? I had heard that the first two numbers were the year it was manufactured. But the first two numbers on mine are 27...
It says it was made in Japan but I don’t have the model # sticker on it anymore. I think it may be an SB301.

Yes, the year should be the first two numbers but of course 27 would not work... Have you got a picture of the number & bass?

I got one SB315, couldn't see the serial number or production year, cause it's covered by the shielding inside the control cavity.

Judging by the preamp ( AFAIK there's at least 3 or 4 different preamp versions ), mine is one of the first generation.

The bass supposed to be pearl white, but the aging affected the clear coat, then it turned to somewhat "champagne" color. For my taste, seems as nice as the original white.

Now i'm looking for options to swap the preamp, the OEM is not bad at all, but not even come close to the new models available after 2 decades, i guess...

I was told by some owners to stick with Glockenklang preamp, or go to the most natural choice, the EMG's.

Since EMG's preamps work better with EMG pup's, and i want to keep the SGC pup's, i guess i'll try the Glockenklang option.

Other option is the cheaper Tone Monster SBK-3AD, as some folks already know about i'ts a good preamp.

More will be informed, as i'll start with the mods... Thanks!

I bought this near mint 5 string in 2007 for $99 at a pawn shop here in Austin. It just needed a replacement barrel output jack and I used it the next evening at Cool River Cafe. I eventually switched everything to EMG. It was a PJ model with Gotoh tuners and bridge. Wish I still had it.

I did some changes on it past few months ago, but forgot to post here, so... I found pickups same dimension and style ( solid cover ) for sale at Ebay, they're original equipment parts from the Squier Deluxe line, pretty cheap and solid sounding pickups. Brand new and cheap, that's the best part.

I give it a try, and now i'm pretty satisfied with the results while keeped the same appearance of the bass.

They have the same clarity of the SGC's but with more punch and volume.

Curious why it's so hard to find any information on these guitars?

I purchased this used around '95 - '96 and recently got it all spiffed up. I'm trying to determine the Model and year, as well as where to buy any accessories [truss rod cover, case, etc.], so any light anyone could shed would be greatly appreciated!

There's an old '95 catalog here: Bass Collection SGC Nanyo
