Recently picked up a Player II Mustang, and quickly fell in love with how easily it played (the necks on these are so thin and smooth), but still preferred the classic Mustang aesthetic to the modern PJ's. I then thought hey, with a little bit of elbow grease and creativity, I can get it a little closer. An order for some Nordstrand NM4s and a few hours of work later, including cutting a custom pickguard that would house the new pickups, I have something that sounds great, feels a bit more versatile in tone, and has more of a classic Mustang vibe. I know the purists will scoff at the J pickup and the bridge, but until Fender puts out a classic looking Mustang with a neck this nice and no relic finish, I am more than happy with this setup.
The reason I also mentioned sharing gratitude for TalkBass... I realized that I took what have once been an incredibly daunting project a couple of years ago, and finished it pretty easily! Soldering and shielding? Cutting a custom pickguard? Figuring out how to solve a niche issue about screw sizes and pickup mounting? Literally learned it all here on TalkBass over the years - I don't think Google has never failed to find me whichever random thread from like 2009 has the answer I need.
This community rules, and while I'm no pro, I do feel way more confident with DIY projects because of the help you can find here. Don't be afraid to try these things yourself!
