sheehan´s distortion

Wish I knew! Sounds like distortion pedal with overdrive pedal and then a POG comes in later. And of course his skill and technique.

I LOVE this guy as a bassist and he's my favorite rock bassist of all time.

Most of his distortion, before he had started using Ampegs, were from the Pearce Preamps he was using. They are solid state, and had soem very high gain overdrive. I believe his were modified as well with the distortion channel having a lo cut, and the clean channel being padded so it would not clip.

In addition, when soloing, he frequently dropped in an Eventide Harmonizer.

so his effects comes from pre-amps?. theres any pedal´s that could get the same effect?

The guy's got a mountain of gear listed on his site:

Billy Sheehan - bass player from Mr. Big, Niacin, Talas and DLR
doesn't say´s anything about distortions =/
Ok, he is who he is and that's it. You give him a cheep bass and a crap practice amp , he'd sound great and then he'd destroy them..you can get all of his gear and you'd still sound like yourself..................................:)
i never said that i wanna sound or be him,(that would be ridiculous) or get all his gear, i asked about the effects and distortions that he uses, not the techniques or any other stuff. i just wanna play (my own stuff) with the same or a similar distortion effect.

Right, his distortion comes from his pre. The trick is to have a distorted channel along with a clean channel so that you still have a solid tone and low end. You can do that in your own setup with pedals as well.

edit: what sbass traveller said.

Another part of his sound definitely comes from the fact that he runs 2 outputs from his bass into 2 rigs (one for bass and one for treble) so he's still able to get a nice full range and note-definition even with the distortion on.
yeah, i guess you´re right his attitude bass have 2 outputs, and i found this "Sheehan also uses two amps to achieve his signature tone (as do Chris Squire of Yes and Doug Pinnick of King's X), one with full distortion and notch filtering to sound more guitar-like for solos, and one super-clean for the low end of the neck pickup" but there´s gotta be a way to get that effect with some pedal´s or something. what you think?

maybe something like the Source Audio Bass Multiwave distortion, check it out. It affects specific frequencies (which you can choose).

Dosi could be right about this.

2 NAMMs ago Billy walked up to our booth and told us that he read about our Multiwave Distortion technology, got excited, and then purchased our Multiwave Distortion for Guitar (the only one we had at the time). He said our booth was the first stop of the day, because he wanted to personally thank us for the unique sounds which he had been looking for. (I know this sounds like marketing BS, but it is the honest truth)

When we told him about the Bass version and thought he would get excited, he said that he was already running 2 separate channels (as described above) and could handle the wet/dry mix in this manner.

He gave us this quote, which is on our Billy page: "I have tweaked around with the Multiwave for a while. It's a pretty amazing unit! I'm pleased to see such an innovative approach to distortion unleashed on the public--very cool."

He stopped by to see us multiple times this past NAMM. He is a really, really nice guy in person. We are fans.

wow, that´s awesome, i wish i could meet him too. i guess i´ll have to try it. does anyone own´s one?

As soon as your hands can make the sound of a flanging pitch shifting octave dividing delayed reverbed distorted bass, tone is not all in the hands.

Patching, plugging and knob twiddling by hand here:D

I own a SVT BSP and seldom run the effects side of it but it has 2 discrete outputs for clean and overdrive.

I operate it by hand too!
