sheehan´s distortion

It wouldn't be the exact same, but the Ampeg SVT5-Pro has dual channel capability that allows for the player to combine and blend to taste the OD/Distortion Channel (that is modeled after the Sheehan Signature Pre) with the clean channel. Again, not the exact same, but it will get you close, and the SVT5-Pro's can be found for pretty cheap these days considering their original list price.

wow, those are great amp´s! yeah i guess that´s what it gives that special tone.

After trying the new large version of the Sansamp Vt pedal, I thought the full all out distortion setting was similar to Billy's tone. Try one out if you can and see what you think.

I have the Ampeg SVP BSP Preamp and I can attest the distortion tones in the VT pedal are similar.

My setup is more elaborate and I don't rely on one preamp or use distortion much, but it is there when I desire it.

I use a SVP Pro preamp for my main tone and the SVP BSP patched into a mini mixer then panned respectively into a stereo power amp into 2 SVT 810's. This way I can effectively blend the distortion ( panned mono) with the clean bass tone (panned stereo) so I never use that low end that solo distortion seems to thin out yielding a very powerful and full distortion.

That's something most pedal I have tried don't seem to capable of. Other people may disagree or have better suggestions.

His tone sounds pretty compressed to me. I always thought it made sense b/c of his tapping techniques.
his first solo album was called "Compression" because he likes to use a lot of compression. I know he used to use a modified Pearce BC1 preamp and Ashly compressor into Ampeg heads and cabs. He recently switched to Hartke amps but still sounds like Billy Sheehan. I'm guessing he still uses the Pearce. The Yamaha Attitude's P pickup has a super hot output which helps in getting extra drive out of whatever is in your signal chain.

the effect towards the end of the clip is an eventide. cant remember what model, but he talks about it in the rig section of his advanced bass dvd from a few years ago. he still uses the pearce preamps, not sure if he really used the ampeg pres ever. it was more so for backups if his pearce ever died (and as an alternative to those of us who wanted one but couldnt find a pearce!) i think hes down to 3 of them now. i wonder if hartke will ever make a billy preamp?
