Not a knock on other manufacturers (there are tons of good ones) but utmost respect to Mr. Dingwall.
I recently acquired my first Dingwall 5 string (an Afterburner I, Alder body; Wenge neck). After years of playing standard 34" scale basses I was nervous about the fanned frets. I was also anxious about the axe perhaps not meeting my tonal needs.
I am blown away by this instrument! It plays and sounds so fantastic. I know playability and tone are subjective, but the bass is perfect in absolutely every way - starting with that incredible "B" string
It's easy to appreciate the risks he takes in designing and building his basses. I was struck to learn he even makes his own knobs because he couldn't find something that would fulfill his vision. That's detail.
Anyway, my two cents. If you are on the fence (as I was) give it a shot. I'll have this bass until the day I die.
