shoe string basses (cheep basses)

The white bass is a Squier Affinity 5 string Jazz-$227, The middle one is a J.R. Beck 6 string (body is solid padouk & active pups w/brass nut) $200, The black one is a 80's Fender Jazz Bass special MIJ-$400.
The J.R.Beck is an interesting story: There is a man here in Austin who went into business with a very large investor to manufacture high quality guitars & basses in Korea & China & then sell them here in a store. They went over there & set it up in Korea & had a bunch of instruments made (copies of Strats, LPs, Gibson 335's, Teles & 4,5 & 6 string fretted & fretless basses. After they got them back here the big investor bailed & gave all the stock to the the other guy. Now he has a whole warehouse full of stuff & nowhere to sell it. So, he started selling them out of his house & gives ridiculous deals in an effort to get rid of them. My 2 six string basses (fretted & fretless) were bought for $400 total & he sold me a very nice archtop jazz guitar for $50. He now has a deal where you buy one guitar & get one free...no kidding. The basses are heavy but sound incredible & the workmanship is very good. All my guitar player friends now own at least one J.R.Beck. Dude is still selling basses as fast as he can.

Rogue 8-string I saw on Craig's List one Sunday morning.
Turned out to be a pawn shop's advert, and I threw my GF into the shower and told her to bust a move.
She said "But we're supposed to be at my parent's for pot roast in an hour".
I told her to call her mom because "we're going to be late".

Checked it out carefully, made a deposit, picked it up a few weeks later.
$179.99 in mint condition with a Fender tweed case that needed new latches.
