Shopping in LA

But thankfully, World Records and Pat are still around in Bako.Back in the day, when wet nosed kids like me and my bandmates used to venture down to LA to drool on and/or purchase gear, we would hit the original GC on Sunset, and Nadines in Hollywierd.
Just found out Nadines is gone.....
Bummer.
Of course, we'd also hit Tower Records while we were there.

Funny tho. One of the bands I play with practices down the road from Nadines. Already mentioned a few times, and what I failed to bring up that others did was the attitude there sometimes. Another thing that I forgot about(and might be a problem, I don’t know), is that I believe the owner is Russian(but once again, I’m not entirely certain)and since the bassist is Ukranian, there may be potential weirdness. Or not.
Wow, this is a real issue - Gary is from the Eastern Ukraine and identifies as Russian. Back in 2014 we had a brief chat about the annexation of Crimea, and it was quickly clear that we were not on the same page... (Bias alert - my Grandparents all were Lithuanian). That said, he truly knows his business on the amp front. And I don't know if she's still on the scene, but "Tina" did great bass set-up and repairs.

I actually live in LA !As a former resident of LA, I thought only those who spent time in lower Alabama knew we called it that.

I don't get the joke, sorry. Do people from Los Angeles not like having it called "LA"? I know that people in San Francisco object to "San Fran", but somehow are okay with "SF", which no one not from there would assume was okay.

I’m afraid I’m guilty of adding to the confusion by taking your inquiry on a tangent by picking up the inquiry about Lower Alabama as being LA, which is something of an inside joke among residents of lower Alabama. Apologies for the derail.

Lot's of well-meaning recommendations in this thread, but I think a lot of them are optimistic and may not be in touch with the times or current market. I think GC is a solid one, and, despite some of the friction with the owner, Amp Shop is likely to have more 5s than anywhere else. The vintage shops are maybe going to have one or two.
I think you misplaced an apostrophe there. The vintage shops, in spite of any use of that word in their name, are more of a catch-all of used from different eras. Inventory evolves over time; I don’t make it in that often, but Caveman certainly has had five-string basses in the past. Maybe not boutique, although they do have some upscale stuff come in. Imperial, at least the one on Magnolia in Burbank, is always surprising, but it’s all subjective. Sunset GC has often been ho-hum when I’ve made it in. Ultimately, the point is moot as she was in town for a brief period, probably not having time to run around, and we don’t know what quality level she was seeking or what her budget was.
TB has come up big with all of the suggestions. I don't know exactly what she's looking for. She hasn't said active/passive, brand, etc...
She has today and maybe part of tomorrow to shop and then the tour moves them on. When I get an update, I will report back.

LA is Los Angeles. Dispite what Louisiana people claim. But to be correct, I suppose we should refer to it as L.A. Go Dodgers!

With limited time, GC Hollywood may be her best bet. Or the Sam Ash across the street. I haven’t been in either one for awhile now. Pandemic and all that…And I don’t pay any attention to fivers. But both stores usually have a lot of basses. And the downstairs “vintage” room at GC is pretty good.
The GC is her best bet. The Sam ash is very limited.
Also, if you have the chance, definitely go into the expensive and vintage room at the Hollywood GC. It's very different and much better than a strip club. you can touch them, but you still can't take them home.
