Greetings fellow talkbassers.
I'm considering a bass purchase / build and am looking for advice. First a little background. I grew up on Fender basses and like the Fender bass model. My first bass is a Musicmaster short scale. I like the playability of that bass with it's thin, fast neck. I'm not real crazy about the flat vintage bass thump I get from it. Over the years I've owned a bunch of different basses and have come full circle back to Fenders. My favorite bass is a Warmoth build I bought from NYC bass here on TB. It's a chambered ash body under a maple cap with a canary wood neck. The tone from that bass is MY tone and I love it. None of my other Jazz basses makes that tone whether amped or acoustic. I picked up the Musicmaster the other day and considered how I could get the playability of the 30" short scale bass and the tone of the 34" Jazz bass into one instrument. I've done some searching and have come to the conclusion that it's probably not going to happen. But undaunted, I'm here asking the group if it IS possible.
I see the Warmoth SS parts that are available. I realize that for the most part I can assemble a carbon copy SS version of my coveted 34" Warmoth bass. BUT - is there a chance it will sound anything like the 34" bass? Even close? Because of my limited exposure to SS basses (Musicmaster, Mustang, Gibson EB(x), etc) I have always equated SS basses as thumpy vintage basses. Is that inherent in the 30" scale, or is it simply the instruments I have been exposed to?
