My Höfner Ignition Club bass cost me all of $239 with case on sale a few years ago. Strung it with La Bella Beatle bass 50-100. Plays great with a huge sound and wide range of tones.
Have an Ibanez Artcore AFB 200 full on hollow and a Hofner ignition club and a Jack Casady. They are have different strengths with the Casady usable for any kind of music. The AFB has a lot of thump and the Hofner sounds like Sir Paul

hofner ignition / icon violin bass. to my ear, sounds better / richer/ deeper than the epiphone. also weighs less.

If you’re willing to stretch to $1000 you can find a used Guild Starfire II which is the best of the short scale hollow bodies
I have an Epiphone Viola equipped with flats. Doesnt get played out much because I have a lot of basses. But it's fun and easy to play, has that special sound, and not nearly as fragile as I thought it would be. Never played a Hofner Ignition that some are recommending so can't compare them, but I'm happy with my Epi.

It seems like Hofner would tick all the boxes for you. Ibanez Artcore is good too. I recently purchased a really nice used Ibanez AFB200 from GC for around $400.00--fully hollow body and short scale. I returned it after a couple of weeks as I just wasn't bonding with it, but I was impressed with the quality of it. Another one to consider is Gretsch. There's a nice looking Gretch G5442BDC Hollowbody shortscale on Reverb right now that's about in your price range.
If you want Beatles, and an Indie vibe as you put it, I am guessing you may mean Kevin Parker who just base his bass tone off of a Paul McCartney. Kainalu a indie music project uses a Hofner and a Mustang.
While I love the Jack Casady, Ibanez and and many more. I think the Hofner fits your choice the best, but it's something as well all agree should be given many tries before purchasing.

I had one of these for a couple of years. Very easy to play and everyone wants to touch your bass ;-)
Hofner quality is all over the place. They're great basses, but play a bunch.
Keep in mind that there can be a huge difference in feel between different makes and models... e.g., a Hofner and an Ibanez Artcore will feel completely different from one another because of the neck shape, string spacing, etc. One might feel super uncomfortable while other might feel effortless to play... I do best with narrow string spacing and very little neck taper, but others find it too weird or cramped...
Is the 0 fret problematic? Seems like such a terrible idea making setups a real pita
