Shoud I get an Ibanez SR256?

'cause below Premiums there would really be nearly no reason to switch to other Soundgears in between

If you're saying a 25X or 30X SR model sounds like a 50X - 70X SR, you're dead wrong

Sixers are hard to play-- at least to keep stuff from rattling around and making muddy tone. An inexpensive one might be a good bet for you to spend some time with to see if it's your thing.
On the other hand, a cheapo bass might play badly enough to dissuade you.
Cheap ibanez basses are good value in general, so you won't be getting hosed or anything. I say go for what ever you like and can afford.

As a matter of fact I'm strongly considering the 506, myself. I played one at Sam Ash through a few amps and think it sounds good. Obviously you can get a better sounding 4 at that price point but if the idea is to start playing a 6 and upgrade later it seems like a good idea.

Hey, I've got an SR206 and an SR506. Both are killer basses. thin necks that play like a dream. Nice fat modern tone. I just got them for bar basses but love them.
The SR206 I have is really nice, BUT it doesn't have 24 frets (which I like in a 6 to give you 2 octaves up the neck) and there is some uneven volume from string to string that you need to EQ a bit to even out. The SR506 is 24 frets and is even in tone, but costs more.
Both mine are black and I love the looks. I hate that brown look they all have now. Enter the 256! Now I'll caution that we've had no actually playing reports back yet, but it is clear that it has 24 frets. It is snazzy white and not icky brown. And they SAY that the uneven tone thing has been compensated for in the pickups. And all for a really nice low price.
For a noob 6er this has got to be hard to beat. Hey! It's hard to beat for ANYONE! I'm having GAS pains already over it and I need a third SR 6er like a hole in the head. Personally I'm waiting for a hands-on report from a TBer but so far it looks really good!

What I meant was:
No particular upgrade from brand new C.A.P. pickups and electronics to Bartolini's mk1 (and I could even add BTB's Bartolini mk2) unless you reach up for SR1200 Premium's Nordstrand
So what's wrong with this?
I even got the brand new SR505 Fretless. I bought it for I ain't found no SR375 Fretless and money was no issue, otherwise...

Any idea about the Bartolini Customs in the SR5006E? I know this is a LOT more than the 506 but I'm kind of thinking about it down the road. I was also thinking about grabbing the 506 and dropping EMGs in it. THoughts?

SR4500E Prestige is ash/maple: I expected it to sound like a
MIJ "Fender Marcus Miller in Soundgear dressings"
I couldn't be more wrong...
Big sound, with active/passive switch, three band equalizer and a mid frequency selector to cover all the sonic spectrum
No way similar to Bartolini mk1:scowl:, believe me... those USA Barts can let your head peak almost everytime, until you get accustomed to them
On an SR506 I'd suggest to accomodate a pair of Nordstrand BigSingles (yes: the ones on SR1206E Premium) they're perfect retrofit with Barts mk1 and you keep the stock three band equalizer.
Only, convert the midscoop switch in a on/off one: Nordstrand have those beautiful exposed polepieces that
"demand" to growl under your stringwork

Yes, electronics are pretty much the same, but each model sounds a bit different.
And agathis on SR300 is sure no mahogany on SR500/700(with figured maple)/1200(with ovangkol)/XXV(with padauk) or ash on SR600/4500.
Yes, all those basses don't necessarily sound the same... That's why we were just narrowing it down to electronics

I don't see why not. I own an ibanez sr250 and an ibanez sr255. both great sounding bass guitars. I'm pretty sure that the ibanez sr256 is a pretty decent 6-string bass.
