Yes people are born with musical ability,
At least in my opinion, not saying that i am the truth,
Because some people are just better off than everyone else to start an instrument due to their backgroud and things like that
When i say background, that includes how much one has been in contact with music, their finger length, or family's support
Actually, two years ago,
For this orchestra audition with my cello,
I practiced 15 minutes the day before
And i was the one who was the section leader,
Which meant that i was better than 11 other cellist at that time despite the fact that other cellist practiced much more than me
Oh and this is off topic,
But one of my buddy,
He plays guitar and he absolutely loves metal
But he suck balls although he practices (like intense) about 4 times more (in terms of time) than my other friend who are a lot better in guitar than him
And your formula,
I honestly suck balls at theory

But still, a lot of people say that i should major music in university (so that's playing, not theory =])
And you said that my formula favors the natural talent over practice
Um...nope
I did not put any values there, let's sub in some values

And love of music,
I think that goes under practice as one will practice more to get better because they love music, right?

BTW, finger length as an indicator of how good you'll be? If that was true, Shaq would be the greatest musician on earth.

I never said that the finger value is the d value, talent
As it is a part of the a value, what you start out with
And for me,
I have really tiny fingers to start out with
So now, my left fingers are about 5mm longer than my right fingers
Weird eh?
Yeah, but it would be hard to start with fingers that can't even reach like a string right

I had a strap that had my bass around my stomach, the guitarist of our band kept making fun of it (because he had his to his knees, typical :rolleyes: ) so i got a longer strap to shut him up. Even still he thinks it needs to be longer. Right now its at my belt/crouch area.

It depends on what kind of playing you do. I find that pick playing seems a lot more natural with the bass slung low - I think it's an "evolutionary" thing as much as anything that has a lot of punk and metal bassists wearing the bass way low (though at some point an overcompensation - if you have to crouch over or spread your feet way apart to get a good approach, you're just handicapping yourself!) I'm not primarily a pick player, though - mostly I do standard fingerstyle, and I find wearing the bass higher tends to help to an extent - if I'm bending sharply at the elbow, it's going to get wearying pretty fast. I basically never play slap, but on the occasions when I have, I've found that the higher the better - I find it easier to get a good approach on the strings the higher the bass is.

So, for me, since I do fingerstyle 90% of the time and pick 10%, I keep the bass just slightly above center on my belt. What works for you is what works for you though...

someone posted a pic the other day in one of these threads a few days a ago, a guy from a local doom or sludge or something band which, iirc, played with the bass hanging below his knees... can someone find that again for me? I should have saved that when I saw it, it was so extreme... can't find it thru the search function now.

mine barely touches my belt. if you plan on being a versitile bassist, wear it high. it's easier to pluck when it's up. It's easier to tap when it's up, slapping, harmonics, etc. low is for show. But still, look at victor wooten. He wears his high as the sky and he looks super beast!

Mid-high. Mind you, I am geomeetrically out of perportion, i. e., my arms are too long for the rest of me. I am 5'7" tall and wear a 35" sleeve in a dress shirt. Put another way, the distance from finger tip to finger tip is supposed to equal one's height. My "wingspan is close to 6' and the bass is still more comfortable and easier to play fairly high.
