should i approach my guitarist to do a side project??

well the story is i have known these guys for about a year, not enough gigs to my liking, the leader is the vocalist and likes to control everything, the issue is he is slack and missed a few rehearsals...but he is mates the with the guitarist and drummer from years back....

so i know the guitarist likes the same music as i do which isnt what the band is playing but he is always breaking out in riffs in between songs etc...

these riffs are from hard rock bands of the 90s....and i wouldnt mind doing a side project and getting something like this going, now if i approach him, i am afraid that the leader (singer) might accuse me of band wrecking and stealing his guitarist, which then puts me in the outer....should i risk tryin to get together with the guitarist to start something up??? and how should i go about doing it?

If that's what you want to do and that's what the guitarist wants to do then GO FOR IT. Who cares what the singer thinks... Just because you are in a band doesn't mean that you can't branch out and do anything else. Bands these days take themselves too seriously IMO. Play music, have fun and don't worry about everyone else.

do it, man! no reason not to at all. My drummer and I started a Rush cover project (we play in a reggae/funk band), and everybody totally knows about it and is fine. As long as you can maintain your commitments to the main band (if you see this current band in that way), then there's no reason for trouble!

You should go for it! If your current band isn't enough to keep you musically occupied, no point in waiting around going stale, ya know?

As for how to go about it, I would say make sure you emphasize to the guitarist that your side project will not take priority over the main band, that way if it gets back to the singer, the singer can't say that there is a conflict of interest.

If your guitarist agrees, then I think it's best that both of you present your side project to the rest of the band together so that everything is out in the open.
