College will get you job that gets you the money that gets you the bass! (okay, not the exact bass. You know what I mean.)

Dump the "I-been-Had"...
You'll get more miles out of the Fender..

And it will be worth Wayyyyyyyy more than any Ibanez in the future.

keep the Ibanez and save up for the pbass.....I always wanted an Alembic Bass....IMHO, the Cadillac of ALL basses, but could not afford one when I was a teenager or later as a married father (with many responsibilities). I had cheaper basses but they served the purpose (Epiphones, Kramer, MIM's, Arias etc).
When I was more financially stable (and older) I finally bought a used Alembic Persuader and had a custom bass made by Dave Pushic....good things come to those who wait. Play what you can afford now and get exactly what you want later!

i would avoid guitar center and scanning classifieds until you have a reasonably steady income. just like bean-o, there will be no gas.....when you get cash, buy what you really want, and take your time. clearly neither of these basses were really the one you wanted, but much more impulse purchases. we've all been there.

Wow, solid choice! Having a rainy day fund and a decent job beats worrying about monthly payments.

Basses come and go. Good instruction will last you a lifetime, I'd put any extra dough towards working with a good music teacher.

Before i saw your reply, I was going to suggest you return the ibby. You would be able to take the cash from the layaway, and purchase the ibby any time. Given the fact you only had a month to get the pbass out you made the best choice. Trust me there will be another perfect bass for you. At only age 16 there will be many more perfect basses.

Good luck with school. The smart thing. You can play bass and go to school. Double your chances to be great.

Those 70s fenders are nothing to write home about. Dollar for dollar that Ibanez well blow away the fender. No IMHO about it. TRUTH.

Absolutely untrue and a broad generalization.

SOME 70's Fenders are complete garbage but there are great ones out there if you look..... specifically 1970-1975. IME good examples can be as good as pre-CBS Fenders.

To say that every bass Fender made for a 10 year period in the entire 1970s is a bit absurd.

P.S. Nothing wrong with the O.P.'s Ibanez in many case.

Wow! Fantastic choice and quite mature for your age. Always keep in mind that you do not have to go brand new and a used instrument will last forever too. Plus, you can save some money.....that $520 will be good for books and a few other necessities for your classes though. Good luck.
