I'd have asked about shipping, in a case, boxed, etc etc.

Tbf, a extra cardboard box does nothing else a decent case cant do, but I wouldnt think $50 would cover shipping with any confidence.

And if the seller was cool shipping on that basis, that would set alarm bells off.

I mean, ya don't know whatcha don't know. There's hundred thousands of TONS (literally) of people who've never shipped anything large in their life. People figure "ah well no need for a box. It's just a thin layer of cardboard it ain't gonna do nothin. Besides. It's got a case. That's what it was made for. It'll be fine. UPS is gonna charge me HOW MUCH to box this thing up AND ship? HOW MUCH?!?!? No thanks. I'll just box it up myself."

yep, I'm guilty of shipping slightly better than that. I used bubble wrap and packing paper to fill the gaps inside the case. Then put cardboard directly on the outside of the case, then taped and plastic wrapped that. I thought well these are tour cases and they go through airport baggage etc so should be fine.

It was a suggestion.

Short of that, I'd look toward an actual complaint to the site about how their sellers (agents, really) are shipping things.

I said a negative thing about a seller from breveR here, once and a handful of sellers from that same site cropped up to talk about "standards" and such. While I have never had an issue with that site standing behind (once was out an out theft) their "standards", if they don't know one of their sellers isn't maintaining a certain level, how are they going to fix it?

That's not how these sites work. No seller is an agent of the site. They don't particularly care about how things are shipped, they care about sales. They leave the details of the shipping to the buyer and seller. There is one way to lodge a complaint: feedback, and it's the closest thing to what you are suggesting.

Actually, by operating under the "umbrella" of the site, the seller is effectively an "agent" of that site.

Even if that weren't the case (and legally, a case could be made for that), there's a symbiotic relationship going on here so it behooves the site to include shipping standards into the other criteria.

The seller gets the "name recognition" of the site and the site moves merchandise without lifting a finger. Like it or not, they are "working in concert". Why else would breveR be so good at "stepping up to the plate" when there's an issue the seller won't address? Easy. It's because there's some responsibility on their end when there are too many unsatisfied customers (and possible legal action in some cases).

I would throw that guitar in a big garbage bag with 20lbs of rice and let it sit for 3-4 days, moving the rice around once or twice a day. I am quite serious. You have no idea how long that thing sat in the damp case, and that can cause all kinds of issues that may not be obvious right away. Fret pop, finish matting, and remember moisture kills electronics. Not a question of if, but when.

I had a Guild bass shipped UPS from about 1.5 hours away from me. It arrived in a molded Peavey case with duct tape over the latches. Thankfully the handling time was low and the instrument wasn't damaged.
