I've had this happen one or two times as well. It's always very surprising when it happens. I guess people assume because it's a flight case, it's OK? Weird.

The real question is, was the case part of the deal?
If so, I'd be angry.
If not, then the case is just a box. The seller chose to use a fancy box. It got wet. Whatever. Contents of the box were fine.

Be mad for the moment and then roll on. Bass was good. Not worth wasting anymore time thinking about.
Is this April 1st? This really happened? I'd be dumbfounded. Actually, I *AM* dumbfounded. Should you be pissed? Yes, that and a bunch of other emotions. Edit: I see it's fine. As most are now saying, sure, move on. But you gotta be mesmerized by that one. Certainly one for the memory banks.
If you aren't mad why would we convince you to be mad? This is unusual and, maybe a bit lucky there wasn't significant damage or theft, but its hardly criminal. You're reasoned, relaxed response could be instructive to all of us.
We don't know why the person did this - inexperience, brain fart, couldn't find a box, didn't want to waste. Who knows, everyone thinks differently. Congrats on the new guitar.
I did exactly this with a heavy Fantom-G synthesizer a couple years back. I included an ATA flight case and lock as part of the sale. I took it to UPS to have it boxed and they reminded me that my case was designed to go straight onto airplanes and trucks. So they slapped the label directly on the case and it arrived in flawless condition. No way I'd ship an instrument in a regular case or gig bag!
I've actually had multiple basses shipped like this but they were also in thick bags so they were totally fine.
Only 50 to ship a bass should have been your first indicator.

As a mailman, I've seen some pretty shoddy pack jobs, but this is completely inconsiderate and unacceptable.
I'd be contacting the seller extremely fast.

Sounds like the seller was inexperienced or didn't have a guitar box laying around not all of us do. They could have purchased one online, but then you have to wait for it to arrive and blah blah meanwhile the buyer is upset about waiting and could back out of the deal. Most carriers will make you something but they're expensive and, in my experience, not that great.
I mean if the case was part of the transaction and the case is now damaged I might reach out to the seller to see how they would like to proceed. Either ship the case back or offer you a refund. Just my .02, that seller should be ashamed.
The guitar is fine, the case has mojo from the shipping and you have a cool story to tell.

Bought a bass off eBay a few years ago. The seller slapped shipping labels on the case and sent it off. I was not happy either and almost returned it, but it was fine. Maybe get one of those Ibanez cases it came in for all my bases? Evidently pretty sturdy
