should I do some work on the nut?

I seem to need to put alot of pressure on the first and second frets of my fretless that I built to get any non-muted sound out of it on all strings. could the nut be holding the strings too high off the fingerboard? would it fix if I took material off the bottom of the nut to lower the strings evenly? That is my hypothesis. if anyone has a better idea, I'm all ears.

your strings should be barely off the fingerboard at the nut. Some guys have the string touching the FB at the nut to get some mwah on open strings.

If your nut height is anywhere close to a fretted bass's height, you could get the problem you are describing
