Should i get a Darryl Jones 4 or 5

Finally decided to get me one of these bad boys having
played one and was completely pleased by the sound.

that said, i have only played the 4 string and was wondering
if the extra low B would be worth $?

I like the idea of the graphite reinforced bars in the neck of the 5
which the skyline 4 does not have, and we are talking skyline
lakland's by the way.

That's my "if I ever hit the lottery" purchase.... A passive fiver w/a 35" scale, and I'd order mine ash body/maple neck.. Until then my USA Peavey Millenuim Plus fiver will suffice nicely...

I think you must figure out if you are more comfortable on a 4 or 5... or do you need this for a specific project. I use Fender J 4's for Punk, but anything else it would be my Stingray 5's.

You cannot go wrong with either of them. Will it be your only bass? (I checked your profile but there's no info so it's hard to recommend something)

I have both. I got the DJ4 first and just got a DJ5. Both are very impressive basses, well built, looks great. Don't base your jugement on the graphite reinforcement...there's absolutely no problem with the neck on the DJ4.

i have a 2000 fender mim p bass and it is my first, and honestly it
has given me more headaches than i will say. so i have a 4 string and just sold a squier vintage modified. it was a great bass, but way to bright and harsh for me(i tried a lot of things to tone it down) so now i want a jazz i won't regret and one that will keep me satisfied for all tone!

That is something only you can decide, surely. I would not let people on an internet forum decide for me. Bit of a silly question.

However, I have a DJ4 and it is absolutely amazing, you won't be disappointed with one of these.

Also, I would not recommend the 5'er unless you KNOW that you definitely want a 5'er.

Get the DJ4 and don't look back.

Don't worry about the graphite or anything else. I have skyline 4's and 5's and they're both solid. You really only need to determine if you want a 4 string or 5 string. I'm a 5-string kind of guy, and only pickup up a 4 on occasion for fun or when I play straight rock. If you want this will be your first 5 string, I'd recommend going with a used bass. You'll get more bang for your buck, and if you decide to sell it, you won't take nearly the hit as you would if you bought it new.

The DJs are seriously great no matter which one you buy.....I agree that you should play a 5er a few times to decide....also, the neck profile is VERY different between the two....

I slowly wored my way to all (but 1) fiver over the last 2-3 years...I like the variability....teh transition was not "that" bad for me although I did play a smidge slower for a while when starting on the 5ers......had to know where I was going...now the 5th string feels "normal" and I find my self wanting to go one step lower when playing a 4 banger....

ALL of the colors are awesome (even better than the pictures...they do not so ANY of the finishes justice).....and the MOP blocks - oh my!!!!

I strongly disagree! I tried going from 4 to 5 string years ago by buying a Fernandes (ABP 100, I think). That was such a crappy bass that I never got to make the transition. Also, it had much smaller string spacings than my 4 strings.

One year ago, when I bought my DJ, I decided to give 5 string bass another try. This time around, I feel I'm going to succeed. I think there are two reasons:
1. The handling and sound make it is a pleasure to play this bass
2. The string spacings are the same (or close to) 4 string Jazz type basses

If you decide to take the 5 string plunge, you better do it with a decent bass. I'd say a DJ 5 would be the perfect choice: great bass, and still only half the amount of $ you would pay for Sadowsky. BTW, now that there discontinued, I suppose they will keep their value even better.

Lakland 5 string necks are the best I've played. It shouldn't take you more than a week or so to adapt to a fiver if you play it every day. On a 5, you don't have to use the B string, so you always have four strings left. If you have 4 and want a low Do, you either have to detune or throw a Hipshot extender on the E string.

100% agreed!!! I play alot "mid neck" and it is so nice to not have to move to get a low G or even a low E.....

get one...if nothing else, the 5th string is a great thumb rest! (ha ha!!)

go 4 with a hipshot. of all the 5s I've had though, suprisingly, the DJ5 neck has been one of my least favorites. Which is weird, cause my 55-02 is one of my all time favs. And before some says...aren't they the same..they are indeed different.

however, the DJ4 I had was magical. If I wouldn't have been hard up for cash I wouldn't have sold it.

Be careful with the advice you accept around here! The Lakland DJ 4 with a 34" scale neck and the DJ5 with the 35" scale neck are completely different beasts! Many people obviously love the DJ5, but I'm one who didn't...and I've got large hands! I'll only play 34" scale basses, regardless of the number of strings.

You might find you like the DJ5, and that's great. But, you may also find you don't like the feel of it. The DJ4 is NOT a good indicator of the feel for the DJ5.
