Should I get a preamp pedal?

Hello,

So I love my amp sound. I have a darkglass microtubes 900 amp head on an ampeg SVT heritage. I plan on building a pedal board with a few essentials: tuner, compressor, octave, and in wondering if it’s worthwhile to invest in a separate pre amp. The Darkglass has a built in amp sim (I run the ampeg sim) would a different pre-amp be significantly better? Recently, I got a comment from a sound guy that my tone didn’t have enough low end (I run post DI so that I can run the built in distortion of the dark glass), but I don’t do crazy EQing. +1 on the low and high band. -1 on low and high mids, 0 on the mid. I’ve done light recording for demos and like the sound enough, but it’s through headphones, so idk how it sounds live. Like I said my amp sounds beautiful. Other sound guys have complimented my sound, so idk if maybe I just got a guy who didn’t like it. Since I’m investing in pedals and have the money, I’m wondering if it’s a worthwhile investment to get a pedal preamp.

Wanted to know if anyone had any advice or thoughts? Thanks.

Big part of my sound is stacking two preamps. Guitar players do this sort of thing a lot. You get a louder signal, increased harmonic content, greater sustain, and more tonal options. May not be suitable for some genres. I play rock music so it works well I think. Totally recommend it. If you’ve got a Darkglass amp, perhaps using another preamp brand with different features and characteristics. But it sounds like you’re happy with you’re sound, so a compressor might be a better option. Will to smooth out your sound and can add sustain.

Years ago I was told very clearly by FOH NOT to give them too much low end. It was a “what you hear on stage, you hear out front” sort of situation. HPF have been very useful.
