Should I get an M13 or an M9

Let me start by saying I've had both before and think that the M13 is the more powerful of the 2, mainly due to the 4 fx and the fact each effect bank has its own controls so its really quick to adjust.

This is potentially my new board

My plan is to have any dirt off board before the board so I can switch and swap fuzz's in more freely as I'll be doing a lot with just a fuzz pedal and a wah, both running on batteries.

It's like the Tomato and Liquid Sunshine will be off board and the Proteus will be in it's place

It was all fine until I watched those Jojo Mayer and Nerve vids last night and realised how complex my sound will have to be to be doing that sort of stuff with my drummer (which was always the plan, along with more solo music and looping)

For those that don't know

So I'm now wondering if I'll have enough fx available with the M9 as I'm likely to need an octave fx running all the time, obviously I've got filters sorted and I dod have a Dod FX25 I can squeeze on there maybe.

Then there is also the issue of signal chain placement, the M13's fx loop could be very handy here, especially for separating signals and sending them to different amps or channels on amps. Also the ability to use 4 fx without coming out of the looper is very handy as is the pre/post control as a button instead of a menu setting like on the M9.

Downside is a PT Jr with a M13 next to it and possibly a wah before it is HUGE and starts being a real mess of cable to setup.

Or do I just need to put the M9 off board and add a few more fx to the PT Jr?

Or really do I have all I need with the above setup and it will be awesome and I should stop procrastinating and just buy it :D

Hey Tayste,

I know your pain deciding this one! ;) Probably the M13 would be better as long as you think you'll use enough combinations from the effects onboard, plus you might prefer to have the effects loop on the M13 for placement on some of your external units.

Am re-thinking my set-up too. Have been through soo many pedals and set-ups and am in a 50/50 about the M9. Seems a lot of the M9 effects are great, but am mainly using it for pitch shifting, delays and reverbs . The problems for me are as follows:
1) I miss the quality of the Eventide (owned the Eclipse, Timefactor and Pitch factor) and TC Electronics (Nova System) for these kinds of sounds.
2) My Whammy IV (still my favourite pedal ever for a loooong time) is much better for the pitch/octave effects than the M9 for both tone and tracking.
3) The expression ports of the M9 are pretty unreliable, needing re-calibration often and there is occasional glitching from the slightest movement of the patch cable connecting my VP Jr.

Would love if Line 6 did an update of the M9/M13 in preference though as there has been no word on improvements since the last update. Kinda gives me the feeling there won't be a lot more support for this system from them.

Am nearly to the point of pulling the trigger on the Axe-fx then ditching most of my pedals again. This will be expensive as I'd like the Ultra model plus a Midi controller along with all the required cases etc. but should give me all the options I need (for now! haha!).

Too much temptation!!!

Cheers,

Andy

This is interesting! Very nice vid, thanks for posting.

I'm curious about the other unit in that youtube vid. He uses the m9 plus something else that looks rather multifx. Looks familiair but can't find what it is just now.
So my guess is the one compliments the other and therefor might be worth considering. Getting two different 'small' units instead of the m13.

Subscribed, think I can learn something here.

Personally I stick an OC-2 in one side of an LS-2, everything else synthy in the other side, filters go after everything.

It does mean you can't solo the OC-2 without leaning over and turning a knob though. I used to have a second OC-2 outside of the LS-2 for this purpose but decided that was silly!

TBH if I was concentrating on synthy stuff now I'd add a pitchfactor and modfactor hooked up to that fancy Moog controller, you could do a lot with that. Also in more portable terms the Iron Ether stuff looks very clever.

That's a Moog CP-201 it's a CV and midi controller and all sorts of other goodies.

Sounds like you want everything about the M13 except for its size. Is it too big? If yes, pick M9 else pick M13.

Agreed, I was having a chat about this before, blah blah blah the M13 is too big but my 8x10 and 400+ are just right for gigging :D

I won't be gigging it any time soon, it will be for studio and project stuff.

I think I want the M13, having easy access to 4 fx while looking is a real winning feature.

Yeah makes sense, personally I liked the pitch shifting on the M13/M9, certainly over the whammy.

The Axe Fx is as good as it gets but hardly plug an play and tweakable mid song.

I think there will be another M9/M13 update but I remember hearing rumour of a rack version so I'd expect it with this.

The FX loop is another winner with the M13, I can biamp with it, us it to run parallel processing etc.

I think I've made my mind up no just have to sort signal chain for.

M13
Subdecay Tomato Fuzz
Subdecay Prometheus
Subdecay Proteus
Subdecay Echobox
Subdecay Liquid Sunshine
Mojo Hand 442
Boss LS-2
Mojo Hand Huckleberry V2
2 x Nano Muff's
Hao Rust Ride
Fender Fuzz/Wah
Fender Volume Pedal
Fender Volume/Tone Pedal
Wilson Freaker Wah
Possibly a Colorsound Bass Fuzz
Dod FX25

Also not all have to be used
:D

Ah it's good to be back.

I went M13, down to an M9 and then back to an M13. Probably the thing killed the M9 for me was that it was too tall to fit on my pedalboard and fit in the case that I have. I'll probably end up with both an M9 and M13 at some point.

Say TaySte, how good are the effects in the M13? From what I've seen of it uptill now, everything is just about perfect. It seems to be very easy to use, has a massive amount of classic presets and, if I understand correctly, the option to adjust what you don't like. Plus, it seems to be built like a tank, very road worthy. Right? Meanwhile, in my opinion, all this is very reasonably priced.

So what's the catch? From your rather large collection of 'old fashioned' stompboxes in use, I take it the sound quality of the M13 is not quite a 100% maybe? Sadly I've never used Line6 pedals so don't know anything about them.

In all honesty, what is not to like about the M13? How could it be better? Can it really replace other pedals or is it more realistic to use it with other pedals?

Another question; The two fx loops are just passive loops? I mean, you cannot activate them through one of the switches right? You can put each loop between any of the effects and control the additional stompboxes just like you used to through it's own switches.

Finally, everything I found on Youtube was with guitars, it be great to get a little tour of the M13 with bass. :hyper:

Cheers, Bob.

I'm now thinking of getting an M9 as an all-purposes modulation/pitch/delay box to stick after my "core sound pedals". Do the trems, choruses, delays and pitch shifters work well? I can imagine having tap tempo across the whole lot would be immensely useful.

Mods are great I dialed in things that stopped me missing my Analogman chorus, delays are unreal a serious winner with these fx especially with some reverbs. The pitch shifters, I always thought it did a better whammy than the whammy and I always found the tracking to be really good but I think it's more personal preference and how tidy your technique is with these.

They really are great, the downsides are very few, if you own something the size of a pedaltrain 2 or pro then it's smaller and the fx are likely as good, you may find 4 fx isn't enough for you depending what you are doing.

The looper can't save loops like a jamman or rc-20 can.

Sometimes it's too much choice and you just don't know what to pick for a sound.

It's digital, now it sounds great but there is a fundamental difference between analog and digital outside of sound which is how they react, you can cascade a load of analog pedals and do some crazy stuff, like when I put a EHX Bassballs in a feedback loop it made laser gun noises, now that wasn't an expected outcome just odd situations breed odd sounds from analog pedals. Digital is more consistent does fx in a more logical "What is likely to happen route" which can be great for the touring musician looking to experiment lightly and get a decent tone from a few fx.

This may however not work for the more hardcore fx junkies.

Hope this helps
