A music store I was in recently was offering a late 80s Urge I (though I am now skeptical of this date) for $450, which seemed like a good deal. I played it for a while and it had no obvious defects and great tone. The neck is lovely. Am I right in thinking the price is right? Do you think the bass will offer enough tonally beyond my Jazz?
If it is one of the ones with the two Jazz pickups and the P-bass pickup in the middle it sounds like a steal. There was also a standard version with just the J-pickups. You should be able to determine when it was made by the serial number. I am always tempted by those... medium scale looks fun!
There was also a subsequent short-lived model that had the full 34 inch scale as well. Price sounds good to me.
I think we all have urges! The price sounds good on that one - I've played a few in the past and would have bought one except that I don't play 4-strings. Dan K.
If the bass is this model, $450 is a steal - Not likely, though. The bass your dealer has is probably the MIM model. And in that case, $450 is too high.
So, I ended up getting the Urge at $400 cash, which seemed like a great price. It has three pickups and is 32" scale, and has the Urge 1 pickguard, so I think it is a MIA Urge 1. The only question I have is that the headstock is the color of the photo above in this thread, while the body is a light blue like in this pic. Can anyone explain that?
If the headstock and body are color-mismatched, the neck was probably replaced at some point. There is also the slight possibility that the headstock saw direct sunlight while the body was in the shade, as LPBlue does turn green when exposed to years of light. As long as it's an Urge neck, though, it doesn't matter. $400 for a 1st version US-made Urge is a GREAT deal, regardless of whether the neck is from a different Urge bass.
