You should only play bass on weekdays and weekends. All other times , you should play something else.

Surprised at an emotional response to "should I play bass"... in a bass forum? Hmm. New to the internet, are you?
I think your reason "because there aren't enough good players" is a good reason, as long as you really love the bass and are planning to be one of the good ones. Of course, if you don't love it, it will suck, and you'll be one of the bad ones. It's kind of a "duh" question really.
Short answer is obvious. "Yes, unless you don't really want to, in which case, no."
