Should I try Chromes?

Chromes on a passive J sound great IMO. The strings themselves bring both brightness and thump...just trick out what you want from there by making use of the volume and tone knobs and/or EQ pedals if you have 'em. (My choice there has been the Boss GT-10B, with lots of patches set up that vary mostly in EQ settings only.)

Ordered the strings Friday around 5 eastern. Bassstringsonline.com had them in the mail that afternoon, and based on the tracking info they sent me, the strings are already in town. I'd guess they'll be delivered by Tuesday at the latest.... dayummmmm..... impressive.

I received my strings this afternoon in the mail.... amazingly quick. I installed them, cleaned the film off them and played some. I really like the feel a LOT. I'm really surprised at how zingy these strings are. I definitely want them to mellow out some, but I do hope they retain a bit of the top end. I need to intonate and set my string heights, but they're pretty comfy. Obviously they need to break in before I can comment on tone, but I'm feeling really optimistic here.

How did you clean the film off?

I used some pre-moistened lens cleaning wipes. They have isopropyl alcohol in them, so I guess just rubbing alcohol on a rag would do just as well. I wrapped them around a string and slid it back and forth. The wipes ended up with black stripes down them.

My guess is it's some kind of metalworking lubricant they use on the flat wrap wire.

i just bought some half rounds today and was kind of scared it would just be a muddy, boomy sounding string. They sounded fantastic! They have all the normal tones (almost) of rounds but are missing all the string noise and top end brittle sound. I am totally in love with this sound. Maybe the half rounds would be a good place to start before going to flats. They have the flat feel without such an extreme jump in tone. As a side note after installing them I need to adjust both the truss rod and bridge height because of the added tension.

Ok its been about 2 weeks since I got my chromes. They're losing a little of their zingyness but still brighter than I expected, which is not a bad thing.

At practice last night going thru a GK 700RBII and a GK 2x10 they were positively thick, meaty, beefy, powerful, well defined and clear. Found that rolling the tone back about half made for a very good thing.

So far the verdict is very positive.

I have a set of Chromes on my Squier VM Mustang Bass (which is a string-thru-body bass) and the bass seems to take the strings pretty well, because I have had them on for nearly five months.
