Should I upgrade from Avatar?

I know I've already weighed in, but I have to re-emphasize the tone of the B212.

Mine sounds PHHAAATTT and especially, as someone mentioned, after it's broken it well (I've had mine about a year). The main reason I don't run it together with the 210 often, is because the 212 sounds so awesome by itself!

Its not that I dont rely on them, because I trust them very much and customer service/Dave is awesome. I just keep reading about people switching to Ampeg/Ashdown/GK/Berg and getting huge improvements in tone.

They should be saying a different tone rather than improvement..the frequency range and power handling of the Avatars should give you about any tone of the relative cabs mentioned above...you want...(410s to 410s, 212s to 212s etc.) that's what EQ is for. 210 alone is NOT enough for a serious FUNKY band other than practice! If you are concerned about brand name ...remove the logo and tell everyone they are cusom made. That is a dis service to Dave and Avatar but not having a logo stops the name brand snobs B4 they can try to make you feel bad!

I've been thinking of upgrading as well, as I have stuck to combos and am switching to a head/cab rig. I've tried alot in the search and the best one cab solutions in your price range I've tried are the Genz-Benz NeoX-212T, EBS Evolution Proline 212, and Aguilar GS-410. These are great cabs, the GB is the best overall, very versatile(I'm buying). But the EBS sounds very good for funk, which it sounds like you are trying for, but watch if you buy it, it's not very good for a deep bassy sound that sits well in the mix IME(amazing slap and funk tone though). Aguilar is a great cab and sounds deep for a 410, but is a little mid-scooped, which might be good for what you're playing. Again, I have had no experience with Avatar and cannot speak to their quality compared to these, but I've heard nothing but good things about them. Also, these are all one rig solutions as they are 4 ohms. Except for the Aggie which you can buy in either 4 or 8 ohms. Again, just my opinion

My vote is for the B212 in orange tolex, i had one in red, loved it soo much I sold it to buy 2 x SB112 for modularity. Avatar cabs kill IMO and sound great in the mix. My advice to you, if your still unsure and can't try one out is to give Dave a call and tell him your tone goals and gear, he will recommend to you what would help you best achieve those goals. Great guy to deal with and you'll likely talk to him for a while, about everything, very easy going.

hey dood, either one would work! I think that poster back there was right, the BRX cabs only come in their special line-x like lining and the BR cabs come with custom colors.I dunno anything about the BR cabs, other than the fact that I heard one the other day and there was in fact bass notes coming through it.

+1 on calling Dave. I dealt with him a little bit before I found a used b410 and he's a great guy, and quick to respond. He'll tell you what he'd recommend, and he'll probably be right.

Also, btw, another nail in the coffin idea, I think the brxs only come in 4 ohms. weird.

and btw, to the "gear snob" comments, I have never gotten anyone looking down on my cabs because they say avatar on them (or carvin). they usually say "i've never seen that brand before" and then after I play it and he asks me about my sound, I always give my avie the nod. I actually got one bassist to go out and buy one after hearing it (he told me he was about to buy a goldline... EEK!)

So what I'm saying is, forget the BRX, call dave, probably get what he recommends. If it helps, the 410 is easy to schlep by itself, and loud enough to handle gigs by itself. the 212 is a bit lighter but the same size, so it's easier to carry, and supposedly is loud enough by itself. the one caveat is the 212 is a bit cheaper.



Also, go all orange. maybe spray the grills white :)

To the best of my knowledge, I'm not aware of any negative comments regarding Avatar. The product or the company.

That says a whole lot about them.

Check the Harmony-Central reviews. About as good as any product on there.

IMO, for the money they offer an amazing product. Actually they offer an amazing product regardless of the price.

I've not read the entire thread - my eyeballs are aching! My feeling is that if you have label interest hopefully you might be earning in a higher bracket. You have one 2x10. That will take you nowhere in a touring, which hopefully you'll be doing, situation. I too use the 2x10 format but I always use a pair which you can see in my picture. In your place I would get another identical cabinet and stack the pair vertically. I think that you will enhance your stage presence especially with the orange bass. This rig, along with its DI, should be able to handle any gig that gets thrown at you.

Later on, if you are as successful as we all hope you are, perhaps the big names in bass equipment will come courting YOU! At that time you'll have the wherewithall to buy whatever you fancy.

Man, make my day! Its like a have a bunch of dads on TB! :D

I would go with another 210, but it feels like that wouldnt be enough power. IT would work much better for me, space wise in my Mazda 3, but Im afraid I wouldnt have the power needed.

I plan to get a Sansamp DI soon though.. so that may solve the problem.
