Should I?

I moved from 4 to 5 a little under a year ago. And now I want to go six. Should I trade my SR305 for the GRS 206. I tried that bass today and sounded really good. Only thing is the 6 is 300. And the guy at samash said depending on what manager says what the bass can be sold for I'd 60 perecent. The SR305 goes for 350 new. Guessing it resells for 300 I'd only get 180 back. Should I put the bass on craigslist and try selling it 275-300 and go buy the bass from SamAsh for just forget about it and save for a really good 6? Keep in mind I have no real experience for playing 6 expect messing around at Sam Ash and GC playing the harmonics for Lifting Shadows of a Dream and As I Am and Panic Attack.

What ya think?

This must be urgent, since you waited all of 28 minutes before bumping your own thread. Gas strikes again! :)

Four string basses are nice. A five string really does open another door. Six strings opens another door, but it can be a little tougher than the switch from four to five.

I'm a four string player at heart, but every time I get an audition for a new band, I end up turning to my five string. Its just too useful a tool to handicap myself (a lot of the time.)

I recently bought a fairly inexpensive six string (a Spector Legend) so that I could take the next step. (The legend is a very nice bass for the money, by the way) I've been working with it for about a month now. I'm not at all "lost" like I was when I started with a five. (Of course, when I got my first five string, I gigged it the day I got it - not an approach I'd recommend.) But, I'm still not very "smooth" with my six, and I haven't really incorporated that higher string into my playing yet.

I'm kind of rambling here, but I guess what I'm saying is this: Do you look at the five string as having an "extra" string? If you do, then I probably wouldn't mess with a six. Is there something you can't do on the five string that you could with a six? If there is, then I'd move to the six. Is the 206 a lesser quality bass than the 305? I certainly wouldn't trade down just to get another string, especially if I was experimenting with my only bass...

I've been wanting the 6 for a few months now. Since I've gotten really deep into a Dream Theater high. And it's needed for alot of the songs I'd like to play. The 5 was good for what I wanted at the time. (wrote alot with changes to B and in the Key of B.) Not to mention no changing tunings for Drop D or other silly things.
