This is my current "beater". It NEVER stays in a car overnight, NEVER goes out without a gig bag, and I take great care of it. No chips, no dings, no damage of any kind.

But it's the one I will grab on my way out the door, and I'll use it in places where I wouldn't take my Gretsch ThunderJet.

There is no excuse for abusing an instrument, so I don't. My basses stay in great condition. So this is as close to a beater bass as I'll ever come.

That pickup came out of a Gretsch 2202 Electromatic Jr Jet. Great, powerful pickup that's a TV Jones design. Requires just a bit of wood trimming and pickguard shaving to get into the Bronco, but it's a great choice.

Geez, I really don't have a beater. I've got a 1994 MIJ Jazz that I've had forever and it has seen the road and its fair share of chips and dings, but it's FAR from a beater. I guess if I had to choose one of my three bases as a beater, it'd be that one.

OK. My old Ibanez TR Series 5 string. Never really been cleaned (sorry). 20 year old strings. Still has amazing growl. TLev THRAK sticker, for those who are curious.

this bass would be closest to beater status. It was the one I left at the rehearsal room so I didn't have to drag a bass to rehearsal. But as you can see from the pic. It played shows as well. 1st gen OLP MM2 that I got from a pawnshop for $100

I bought this SX Jazz to be used on the days when I have to leave the bass in the trunk of the car on 0 - 100 degree days. It has handled it's chores well and is a bass that I'm not hesitant to use on gigs. I'm not sure what the finish is on the body but I don't know if it's possible to put a ding in it. I did modify it with an EMG BQC premap, a heavier bridge and a sidejack output, as well as stripping the neck of the orange tint.

Squier body, probably an Affinity, custom rattle-canned. Has an MIM Jazz neck on it. Currently on semi-permanent loan to a friend of mine. The strings on it in the pic are Thomastik flats, I believe, and probably worth more than the bass. Sounded great on it though, especially with a mute. I kind of miss that old thing.


I know how much you admire the bridge setup. I think that's the only position it would do. I wound up putting a bridge cover on it later.

This is the current state of my Douglas Pisces. Tele'd headstock, deglossed body and Antiquities II pickup. I waiting for the StellerTone Tonestyler switches to come in. If anyone wants to put the Antiquities II in one of these be prepaired to do some dremel work. The Antiquities II is larger than the original.

Here's my beater bass,$100 w/case craigslist find Spector.I did replace the tuners w/Carvins for $35 so I've got a total of $135 in it.Since I've bought it I drag it back and forth now instead of my other really nice basses.If this one were to get stolen or fall off the stand or something it wouldn't be devastating.View attachment 491930

is that a spector? i wouldnt exactly classify that as a beater if thats the case

GAFFA tape it to the underside of the car,then no one will see it to steal it.

Can't see any downside with this method........
