This was my first bass, a hand-me down from my uncle. Made in the early-mid 70's, a close copy of a 1970 EB-3, by Penco which was the same factory as Ibanez at that time. Only differences are the les-paul style switch vs. rotary switch, bolt-on neck rather than set neck, and the tuners are the same sealed tuners as you find on tons of 60s/70s japanese basses. Even has the same mother-of-pearl crown inlay on the headstock as the gibson, and the lever-pull activated foam mutes under the bridge!
With some cleaning up of the electronics, new strings and some good EQing, I can get some excellent sounds out of it, I even slap on it in a couple songs, the bridge pikcup can get nice and funky.

My heavily modded Epi EB-0... added 2 additional pickups, made it string-through, and, well, the paint job...

rfclef, have you noticed any major differences (hopefully improvements) in making the Epi string-through? Other than the ability to use regular length strings...
i'm thinking of doing this to mine, any reason you made the E and G string ferrules further away?

Before you buy one, make sure to give it a test drive. The current Epi EB-3s are nice instruments, but also neck divers.
My main beef with the Epi EB3 reissues I've seen is that they're all longscale!
I thought most original Gibson EB-3s were 30-1/2" scale, but I know there were some EB-3Ls.

I like the epi EB-3 better than the gibby because it's longscale. They had to adapt to use with big hands! LOL

Here is my Epi EB3 in it's stock white finish. I put a 60's Mudbucker in her sounds fantastic. I think these basses are a great value. I have 60's and 70's Gibson EBs and I like the Epi just as much.

I have one of my 6th grade beginner students got an EB-3... pretty nice, actually... he loves it (though he cabn't do much yet... beginner band starts off sloooow when you gotta teach 8 different instruments in one class)
Honestly, I bought this on CL for $80 specifically to mod... I did not play it all that much before I started hacking into it, so I really do not have all that much A/B experience with it.. It had old crappy strings on it when I got it, and when I modded it went to the new strings... My imagination at least says it is better... it certainly did not get worse. The E and G are farther away 1-cause I thought it looked neat, and 2-cause the E and G tuners are closer to the bridge, so just wanted to be sure I got as much distance as possible...
I am acutally pretty pleased with it... At some point I may upgrade the tuners... It seems to go out of tune too easily, and I THINK I have done an appropriate amount of stretching on the new strings... It plays fairly well, though on the faster passages I can definitely feel the difference (not that I am great, but I get a little fumble fingered) between it an my Birdsong... go figger.
69 slot head EB-0 project
Very dumb question, but what does the term "Slot Head" refer to? I know nothing about EBs/SGs so I'm trying to learn about them.

That pic is a slot head beacuse the headstock has two "slots" where the strings go into, instead of on the outside like most basses. Does that make any sense? I feel as though my wording could have been better.
I'm definitely thinking about getting an Epi EB3 to mod up as a project, and to gig so I don't worry about anything happening to the '70s EB(YES shes a copy but I love her just as much as the real thing!).
As for the scale difference, the joke was on me when I went from my first bass, the EB3 copy, to a Peavey Millenium 5-string! I had no clue about scale, so I was like "why does my left hand hurt so much?"

Nah, that makes sense. Just confused me because Barkless Dog's EB doesn't seem to have those slots. Hence the question.
