Now that I have your attention, I am looking for ideas or options on how you guys are wall mounting your basses. I was going to have a fancy wall unit built with glass encased doors...but then I realized, as much as I want these on display, they should be PLAYED not just displayed.
I also need to figure out IF my finished basement is ok for humidity/temperature or if its not as critical for electric gear as it is with acoustic gear...I have both. Living an hour or so north of Toronto, our weather is unpredictable and can be hot and humidy or bitter cold. My basement is cool in the summer and warm in the winter - with use of a gas fireplace...which makes me concerned if the air will be too dry.
Right now, my gear is in my living room on a Hercules rack - 4x10Mesa amp and everything - im sure there will come a time when the wife loses her mind and wants the stuff out of sight. lol

I prefer the looks of wall racks with the body facing outward and not sideways...I have seen numerous hanging mechanisms and also ones that support the bass on the bottom AND mid-way up the neck (hang em high guitar racks)...their claim is that the conventional hanging from the headstock is bad for them. Any thoughts?

Greetings from Brooklin!

I used to hang everything on Apex or Hercules wall hangers until the hanger a Fodera was on broke free from the drywall. I caught it is mid air. Friggin' miracle.

I still keep my cheaper and lighter basses and guitars on hangers, but my expensive basses are on a cheap folding acoustic guitar Warwick stand in my office.

If you go the hanger route, make damned sure your hangers are screwed into studs or run a piece of wood (that is anchored into studs) and attach the hangers to the wood.

lol...hey Brooklin! I need to stop by on my way home one day and play with your rack...I mean..... lol....
I like the hockey stick rack - that's a kewl idea...I have a bunch of signed hockey stuff ...hmmm....
Ya my concern about the whole stud thing, is that my basement is steel studs (sucks I know)....but I know that forsure, cuz I finished my own basement! (dohhhh)....

I'd like to be able to keep them flat against the wall...mainly because im SURE I would clunk them together pulling them in and out of the perpendicular rack. All I know, is I have to do something SOON! My kid hit my Dingwall with her acoustic the other day, and I can ALMOST see an impression from it - ya...im kind of anal. hahaha....nice ideas so far.

The stick is actually just hanging there on the hangers. Mats Sundin game used!

BTW, I originally constructed that rack board for my rehearsal room in the basement of our home then in Mid Michigan; which was pretty much the same climate you have in Toronto, eh?;) The basses were pretty happy there, though I did run a dehumidifier in the summer to keep things from getting out of control.

ok so hanging from the headstock hasn't made any ill-fated basses? I saw the 'hang em high' site ones, and although I DO like the way they look when they are angled on a wall, I wondered about the stress on the neck THEIR way...you would think it would cause more issues being weighted on the neck versus hanging vertical from the head stock.
Ok, so there are some good options to look into...if anyone gets bored, post your pics too. :)

Go side on, you can get more basses into a smaller space. You can comfortably fit a bass into a 10cm space, giving you a rate of 10 per metre. These are supported from the bottom, no stress on the neck and easily accessible. I found that when they're sitting there looking at you, you tend to play them more. Success.

ok, I like the way you put a separation between them to help the smashing and crashing - good idea!...im not sure "get more basses into a smaller space" is a good idea! LOL....i'm trying to avoid this site due to how much it costs me....but...it's addicting. lol
